Australian Open director Tiley named US tennis chief

Craig Tiley has been named the new chief executive of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), marking a significant leadership shift in American tennis. After spending 13 years at the helm of Tennis Australia, including serving as tournament director of the Australian Open, Tiley will now take charge of one of the sport’s most influential governing bodies.

Tiley replaces Lew Sherr, who recently departed the USTA to join Major League Baseball’s New York Mets organization. The transition represents a pivotal moment for the governing body of tennis in the United States as it aims to expand participation and strengthen its position globally.

The 64-year-old South African, who has built a reputation as one of the most innovative administrators in the sport, will formally assume his new responsibilities later this year. Before stepping into the role, he will assist Tennis Australia in ensuring a smooth leadership transition. His departure ends a highly successful era in Melbourne, where he helped elevate the Australian Open into one of the premier sporting events worldwide.

Expressing enthusiasm about his appointment, Tiley said he has long admired the USTA’s leadership in developing tennis across the United States and in staging the highly successful US Open. He emphasized his excitement about returning to American tennis, where he previously built strong roots as a college coach, and working alongside local and national leaders to expand the game’s reach and long-term impact.

Tiley’s tenure at Tennis Australia was marked by ambitious modernization efforts. As tournament director of the Australian Open, he championed innovation and growth. Under his leadership, the tournament expanded into a 15-day event, giving fans more access and players greater scheduling flexibility. This change was seen as a bold move that helped redefine the structure of Grand Slam tournaments.

One of his latest initiatives included hosting the inaugural Million Dollar One Point Slam, an experimental format that generated widespread attention and underscored his willingness to push boundaries within traditional tennis structures. Tiley consistently advocated for modernization, digital engagement, and enhanced fan experiences—strategies that paid off both commercially and culturally.

During his leadership, the Australian Open repeatedly broke attendance and revenue records. This year alone, the tournament welcomed over 1.3 million spectators, a testament to its growing global appeal. Tiley’s approach combined commercial acumen with a deep understanding of the sport’s competitive and developmental pathways.

Before becoming a prominent sports executive, Tiley built his reputation in the United States collegiate system. Between 1994 and 2005, he served as head coach of the University of Illinois men’s tennis team. His tenure culminated in a historic NCAA Division I National Championship victory in 2003, when his team achieved a flawless 32–0 record. That accomplishment cemented his standing as one of the most successful coaches in college tennis history.

His collegiate experience gives him unique insight into American tennis development systems, something that likely factored heavily into the USTA’s decision. Tiley understands grassroots structures, youth development, and the importance of collegiate pathways in nurturing professional talent.

USTA chair Brian Vahaly highlighted that finding the right leader was the organization’s top priority. The association has set an ambitious target of reaching 35 million tennis players in the United States by 2035. According to Vahaly, Tiley offers the rare combination of global credibility at the highest level of professional tennis and a strong commitment to expanding participation at grassroots levels.

The USTA’s strategic vision centers on increasing accessibility, investing in community programs, and strengthening the pipeline from recreational play to elite competition. Tiley’s track record suggests he is well positioned to drive that vision forward.

At United States Tennis Association, he will oversee not only the development of American tennis but also the staging of the US Open, one of the four Grand Slam events and a major revenue engine for the sport in the United States. The US Open has grown into a global entertainment spectacle, blending sport, culture, and innovation—areas where Tiley has demonstrated significant expertise.

His appointment also reflects the increasingly global nature of sports administration. A South African who built a career in Australia and the United States, Tiley embodies the international perspective that modern governing bodies value. Tennis, perhaps more than many sports, operates within a deeply interconnected global framework.

Tiley’s leadership style has often been described as bold and forward-thinking. He is known for embracing technological innovation, expanding fan engagement initiatives, and investing heavily in infrastructure improvements. At the Australian Open, he oversaw substantial venue upgrades and infrastructure projects that enhanced both player and spectator experiences.

Critics have occasionally questioned some of his experimental approaches, but even detractors acknowledge his effectiveness in driving commercial success and global visibility. His tenure coincided with significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, during which he navigated complex logistical and political issues to keep the Australian Open operational.

In taking over at the USTA, Tiley will face both opportunity and challenge. American tennis has experienced fluctuating success at the professional level in recent years, though a new generation of talent is emerging. Strengthening domestic participation while maintaining the US Open’s global prestige will require careful balance.

The USTA’s goal of expanding the sport’s footprint nationwide aligns with broader efforts to make tennis more inclusive and accessible. Community programs, school initiatives, and public court investments will likely remain central components of the association’s growth strategy under Tiley’s guidance.

For Tennis Australia, Tiley’s departure marks the end of a transformative chapter. His successor will inherit a tournament that stands stronger than ever, financially robust and globally recognized. For the USTA, his arrival signals renewed ambition and strategic focus.

Ultimately, Tiley’s career trajectory—from college coach to Grand Slam executive to leader of American tennis—reflects a deep and sustained commitment to the sport. His next chapter will unfold in one of the world’s most influential tennis markets, with high expectations and significant opportunities ahead.
