McIlroy will continue to ‘pick and choose’ events

Rory McIlroy has revealed that he intends to continue carefully selecting the tournaments he competes in on the PGA Tour, emphasizing that this approach helps him maintain a healthier balance between his professional career and personal life.

The Northern Irish golfer, who has enjoyed a long and successful career, explained that after spending more than half of his life competing at the highest level, he now feels comfortable taking a more measured approach to his schedule. Instead of playing as many events as possible, McIlroy has chosen to focus on quality over quantity, ensuring he remains both physically and mentally refreshed.

Over the past couple of years, this strategy has become increasingly evident. Since successfully defending his Masters title in April, McIlroy has participated in only two tournaments. While this limited schedule may reduce his chances of securing season-long honors such as the FedEx Cup, he has made it clear that achieving a better work-life balance is his top priority.

“I’ve been doing this for a very long time,” McIlroy said, reflecting on his career. “At this stage, I feel like I’ve earned the right to pick and choose where I play. It might make it harder to win certain titles, but I’m okay with that because it allows me to enjoy life beyond golf.”

Earlier in the year, PGA Tour chief executive Brian Rolapp introduced a series of proposed changes aimed at reshaping the structure of professional golf. These proposals include a system of promotion and relegation between different tournament tiers, as well as an increase in the number of “signature events.” These high-profile tournaments are expected to feature expanded fields of around 120 players and incorporate 36-hole cuts.

Despite these upcoming changes, McIlroy appears determined to stick to his current approach. He even joked that his reduced playing schedule makes him feel like a “part-time” golfer, a comment that highlights how dramatically his priorities have shifted compared to earlier in his career.

After taking a short break following a strong performance at the US PGA Championship—where he finished tied for seventh—McIlroy is set to return to competition at the Memorial Tournament. The prestigious event, hosted by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus in Ohio, holds special significance for McIlroy.

Interestingly, the 37-year-old chose to skip the Memorial Tournament last year, marking his first absence from the event since 2017. He also missed other major tournaments, including The Sentry and the RBC Heritage, further demonstrating his willingness to step back from a packed schedule.

However, McIlroy has admitted that there are still certain tournaments he is particularly eager to win. Among them are the Memorial Tournament and the Genesis Invitational, an event associated with Tiger Woods. Despite his impressive list of achievements—which includes a career Grand Slam, 45 professional victories, and six Ryder Cup wins—these titles remain missing from his résumé.

“There are still a couple of tournaments I would love to win,” McIlroy said. “The Memorial is definitely one of them. It would be special to walk up that 18th hole and shake Jack Nicklaus’s hand. He has been incredibly supportive of me throughout my career.”

McIlroy also spoke warmly about his long-standing relationship with Nicklaus, noting that the two have known each other for nearly two decades. This personal connection adds even more motivation for him to perform well at Muirfield Village.

Looking ahead, the Memorial Tournament will serve as McIlroy’s final preparation before the upcoming US Open, which will take place at Shinnecock Hills in New York. Earlier this week, he visited the course to assess the conditions and prepare for the challenge.

Shinnecock Hills has a complicated history when it comes to hosting major championships. When the US Open was last held there in 2018, McIlroy failed to make the cut, and the tournament became infamous for its extremely difficult playing conditions.

One of the most memorable incidents from that year involved Phil Mickelson, who was penalized for striking a moving ball on the greens. Additionally, the course faced criticism in 2004 when one of its greens was deemed nearly unplayable, forcing officials to water it during the final round.

Reflecting on his recent visit, McIlroy expressed optimism about the current state of the course but stressed the importance of maintaining fair conditions, particularly regarding green speeds.

“The fairways are more forgiving this time compared to 2018,” he noted. “However, the rough is still very thick, which will challenge players. The greens are currently running at a reasonable speed, and I hope they don’t make them any faster.”

McIlroy explained that excessively fast greens can lead to unpredictable outcomes and unnecessary frustration for players. By keeping the speeds under control, tournament organizers can ensure a fair and competitive environment.

He added that proper management of the greens would allow officials to use more varied hole locations without risking the kind of difficulties seen in previous editions of the tournament.

Ultimately, McIlroy believes that if the course is set up correctly, the US Open at Shinnecock Hills has the potential to deliver an exciting and memorable competition.

As he prepares for both the Memorial Tournament and the US Open, McIlroy remains focused on striking the right balance between ambition and well-being. While he continues to pursue new titles and add to his already remarkable career, his emphasis on personal fulfillment represents a significant evolution in his mindset.

Rather than chasing every possible opportunity, McIlroy is prioritizing longevity and happiness, a decision that could ultimately enhance his performance in the long run. By carefully managing his schedule, he aims to stay competitive while also enjoying life beyond the fairways.

Fans will be eager to see how this approach impacts his results in the coming months, particularly as he targets key tournaments that hold special meaning for him.
