Johanna Konta has finally become the last British player to leave the Australian Open after her epic three sets defeat against two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza that finished at 3:12 am local time.
The match for the first time in Australian Open history started as early as 12:30 am local time and when after the clock went past 3:00 am it was the Spanish player who came out victorious.
With Konta’s defeat, all the eight-players in Australian Open, the first major Grand Slam event of the year, have crashed out before the third round.
Konta talking about match said, “It is not ideal for anyone. I don’t think that it is ideal for anyone to do physical activity when it is past bedtime but both us were in the same boat. I think the thing to focus here is that we both played a really good match and on a high level. It was unfortunate that not many people could enjoy it this ale at night.”
Muguruza is now set to face Timea Bacsinszky for a place on the last 16 after the Swiss star Bacsinszky defeated her 10th seed opponent Natalia Vikhlyantseva in straight sets.
