Why Australian Open schedule ‘doesn’t make sense’ to Raducanu

Emma Raducanu has voiced her concerns over the scheduling of her Australian Open first-round match, questioning the logic of being asked to compete on Sunday night in Melbourne after a demanding travel and preparation period. While professional tennis players are accustomed to quick turnarounds, the British number one believes the circumstances surrounding her opening match present an unnecessary challenge.

Raducanu arrived in Melbourne on Saturday, just one day before the start of the season’s first Grand Slam. Her late arrival was the result of a busy schedule that included a strong run to the quarter-finals of a warm-up tournament in Hobart, followed by travel delays that disrupted her plans. With limited time to settle, recover, and adapt to the Melbourne conditions, the 23-year-old now faces the added pressure of competing less than 48 hours after landing.

Seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time in more than three years, Raducanu will open her Australian Open campaign against Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew. Despite her experience on the biggest stages, the former US Open champion admitted that the situation has been far from ideal.

“It’s very difficult,” Raducanu said. “You always want more time to adjust to the environment and to practise properly, but the schedule is what it is. I was pretty much handed the situation and told to turn it around as best as I can.”

While she acknowledged that complaining would serve little purpose, Raducanu’s comments highlighted broader concerns about player welfare and scheduling fairness at major tournaments. “I have to make the most of what’s in front of me,” she added. “It’s easy to be frustrated, but that doesn’t help anyone.”

Beyond the short turnaround, another major concern is the timing of her match. Raducanu and Sawangkaew have been scheduled second on Margaret Court Arena during the evening session. Their match will follow a men’s singles encounter between Kazakhstan’s 10th seed Alexander Bublik and American Jenson Brooksby.

That men’s match is set to begin at 7:00pm local time, and with best-of-five-set matches often lasting several hours, there is a real possibility that Raducanu will not step onto the court until close to midnight. Such late-night starts have become increasingly common at the Australian Open, drawing criticism from players, coaches, and sports scientists alike.

The tournament has a history of matches stretching deep into the night. One of the most notable examples occurred in 2023, when Andy Murray completed a gruelling match at 4:05am local time. While such moments are often celebrated for their drama and endurance, experts warn that they should not be glorified.

Sports scientists and performance experts have repeatedly stressed that playing matches at extreme hours can negatively impact athletes’ physical health, mental sharpness, and recovery. Sleep disruption, increased injury risk, and reduced performance levels are among the concerns frequently raised.

Raducanu echoed those sentiments, particularly with regard to women’s matches being scheduled after potentially lengthy men’s encounters. “I think it’s very difficult to be putting women’s matches after a possible five-set match,” she said. “To me, it doesn’t really make much sense.”

Her comments reignite the ongoing debate about equality and scheduling priorities in Grand Slam tennis. While men’s matches are played over five sets and women’s over three, critics argue that placing women’s matches late at night, especially after long men’s contests, places an unfair burden on players and diminishes the quality of competition.

Raducanu’s situation is further complicated by the expectations surrounding her return to form. Ranked 29th in the world, she has been gradually rebuilding momentum after a challenging period marked by injuries and inconsistency. Her recent performance in Hobart suggested she is moving in the right direction, making adequate preparation and recovery all the more important.

Being seeded at a major once again is a significant milestone in her comeback, and the Australian Open represents an opportunity to make a strong statement at the start of the season. However, the compressed schedule and potential late-night start could test her physical and mental resilience early in the tournament.

Despite the challenges, Raducanu remains determined to approach the match with professionalism and focus. She emphasized her intention to adapt and compete regardless of the circumstances, reflecting the mindset that has carried her through previous high-pressure situations.

Tournament organisers have faced increasing scrutiny over scheduling decisions in recent years, particularly at the Australian Open, where evening sessions often extend into the early hours. While broadcasters and fans value prime-time matches, the balance between entertainment and athlete welfare continues to be questioned.

Raducanu’s comments add to a growing chorus of voices calling for reform. Many players believe that more thoughtful scheduling, including limiting late-night finishes and avoiding back-to-back travel and competition demands, would improve both performance levels and the overall quality of the event.

As Raducanu prepares to take the court against Sawangkaew, her focus will be on managing her energy, nerves, and expectations. Playing under the lights at one of tennis’s biggest stages is an experience she knows well, but doing so after such a short turnaround presents a unique challenge.

Regardless of the outcome, her willingness to speak openly about scheduling issues highlights an important conversation within the sport. The Australian Open may be known for its dramatic night matches, but as players continue to push for change, organisers may eventually be forced to rethink how those moments are created.

For Raducanu, the immediate task is clear: adapt, compete, and make the most of the opportunity in front of her. Long-term, her comments may contribute to meaningful discussions about how tennis can better support its athletes in an increasingly demanding global calendar.
