Are Hearts developing the habit of champions?

Another dramatic Edinburgh derby, another late winner for Heart of Midlothian, and yet another eruption of joy at Tynecastle. Tomas Magnusson’s 88th-minute strike against Hibernian not only secured bragging rights in the capital but also strengthened Hearts’ growing belief that this season could deliver something extraordinary.

Scenes of celebration followed the decisive goal, with head coach Derek McInnes once again sharing a jubilant moment with a nearby ball boy — a symbol of the unity and emotion driving Hearts’ remarkable campaign.

At the beginning of the season, few would have seriously considered Hearts as genuine title contenders. Yet with each late winner and each gritty performance, the evidence continues to mount that McInnes’ side are capable of breaking the traditional dominance of Scotland’s Old Firm giants, Celtic and Rangers.

Tuesday’s victory was not an isolated act of last-minute heroics. It has become something of a trademark for Hearts this season — the ability to conjure decisive moments when the clock is ticking down. Such resilience and determination are often described as the hallmarks of champions.

For years, Celtic and Rangers have built their success on producing crucial goals in the dying stages of matches. Celtic demonstrated it again recently in the Scottish Cup. Now, Hearts are showing they can replicate that same winning mentality.

The importance of the derby triumph was amplified by recent events. Hearts had suffered a setback with a defeat away to St Mirren the previous week, and both Rangers and Celtic have shown signs of improvement following managerial changes. A loss to Hibernian could have shifted the momentum dramatically, especially with Rangers preparing for a trip to Motherwell that could have taken them to the top of the table.

Instead, Hearts responded in emphatic fashion. With just 12 matches remaining in the season, McInnes’ side hold a six-point advantage over Rangers, now managed by Danny Rohl. Celtic sit a further three points behind Hearts, though they have a game in hand.

Hearts have been leading the league since September — a fact that grows more remarkable with each passing week.

The pattern of late heroics stretches back to the early stages of the campaign. One of the first major examples came at Tannadice, where Stuart Findlay scored late to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Dundee United, securing all three points for Hearts.

Not long after, in late August, Alexandros Kyziridis struck at Almondvale against Livingston to seal another 2-1 victory. Then came Craig Halkett’s stoppage-time goal in the first derby of the season, sliding in to convert a Sabah Kerjota cross and ignite celebrations among the travelling support.

These moments are not limited to attacking exploits. Defensive resilience has also played a key role in maintaining Hearts’ momentum. Consider Craig Gordon’s extraordinary save against Dundee when Hearts were reduced to 10 men following Alexander Schwolow’s red card. Protecting a narrow 1-0 lead, Gordon somehow denied Emile Acquah with a stunning stop that preserved two invaluable points.

Statistics underline this trend. Hearts have scored 12 league goals in the final 15 minutes of matches this season. Only Rangers have managed more. That capacity to maintain belief and intensity until the final whistle has become a defining feature of their campaign.

“What we have in abundance is a desire to make the game bend our way,” McInnes said after the derby victory. He praised Harry Milne’s determination to drive down the flank and Magnusson’s hunger to attack the cross that produced the winning goal.

“I always believe we’ve got a goal in us,” McInnes added. “It’s rare that we fail to score. Tynecastle was a beautiful sight tonight.”

Yet while the dramatic late goals capture headlines, Hearts’ ability to win even when not at their best is equally significant. Title-winning teams often grind out results in games where performance levels dip.

Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew echoed that sentiment, stating that to challenge for the title, teams must sometimes “win ugly.” In his view, Hearts did exactly that against Hibs.

Pundits were largely in agreement that the performance itself was below par. Despite naming an attacking lineup, Hearts struggled to control possession and appeared unsettled amid the intensity of the derby atmosphere.

Former Hearts midfielder Ryan Stevenson admitted that the team did not produce their best display. He singled out Harry Milne as one of the few players consistently attempting to drive the team forward, suggesting many others fell short of expectations.

Scott Allan, who has represented both Hibs and Celtic, offered a similar assessment. He felt Hibernian looked more likely to score and believed Hearts were second-best for much of the contest.

However, Allan also acknowledged the significance of the clean sheet and the character shown to snatch victory late on. Such qualities, he suggested, reflect a team building something meaningful.

For McInnes, style may matter less than substance at this stage of the season. With history within reach, securing maximum points is paramount.

Attention now turns to a crucial fixture: a trip to Ibrox to face Rangers. Hearts have already tasted success there this season, winning in September — their first away victory against Rangers since 2014.

At that time, few would have predicted that Hearts would return to Ibrox later in the campaign still holding a lead over the Glasgow side in the standings.

The upcoming clash carries enormous implications. A victory would not only strengthen Hearts’ position but also send a powerful message that their title challenge is no fleeting illusion.

Stevenson made a bold prediction, stating that if Hearts secure three points at Ibrox, they could go on to win the league.

Breaking the Old Firm stranglehold on Scottish football would be a monumental achievement. For decades, Celtic and Rangers have dominated the domestic scene. Hearts’ consistency, resilience, and late-match magic suggest they are determined to rewrite that narrative.

With 12 games remaining, the belief continues to grow. Each late goal fuels the fire. Each gritty win strengthens the foundation.

Whether this remarkable campaign ends with silverware remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Hearts have made the title race compelling once again.
