The British no. 1 player Johanna Konta is going to play against the Australian opponent Ajla Tomljanovic in the first round clash of the Australian Open.
Konta, who is currently world no. 38, has started her training with new coach Dimitri Zavialoff who is the former mentor of Stan Wawrinka. Previously Konta was in training with Coach Michael Joyce. Now Konta is to face Tomljanovic for a rematch after losing to her in their second-round clash at the Brisbane International.
Konta, who is Australian born, has fond memories of the Melbourne Park as she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open three years ago and also managed to reach the quarter-finals in 2017’s tournament.
Konta is also in the loaded top quarter which includes top players like World No. 1 Simona Halep who will have a rematch against her US Open conqueror Kaia Kanepi, Garbine Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, and Serena and Venus Williams.
As for Serena Williams, she is looking to win her eighth title in Melbourne this year in her bid to equal the record of winning 24 Grand Slam events.
Serena will play against Germany’s Tatjana Maria and her likely fourth-round match will be against the top-ranked Simona Halep.
British no. 2 Heather Watson is set to play against the 31st seed of the tournament Petra Martic who hails from Croatia. Carolina Wozniacki will play against Belgium’s Alison van Uytvanck.
Carolina Wozniacki who is looking to defend her title in Melbourne said to media, “Coming back to Melbourne as the defending champion is what I have always dreamed about. I feel at home here. These courts suit me well and I enjoy every minute I am here.”
Wozniacki also paid tribute to Serena Williams as she said, “Serena is the greatest player to have played the game. Her experiences have been a learning experience for me. It has been fun though as well. She now has a baby. It is amazing that she I back on tour so soon.”
