Serena Williams remains on the course of record sealing 24th Grand Slam title record as she defeated Simona Halep in their fabulous contest to make it into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Williams looked to be in ominous form this tournament at Melbourne Park so far as she seeks for one more Grand Slam win to match the Margaret Court’s record of 24 titles.
The 37 years old player extended her winning record over the world no. 1 Simona Halep by 9-1 as she gained a win over her by 6-1, 4-6 and 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena on Monday.
In her on-court interview, Serena said, “It was really an intense match with some incredible points. I love playing tennis, especially on this court. It is really cool to be playing back here once more.”
She further said, “I really needed o to elevate my game against her because she is a great player. I had to play a bit like I knew I did and I think that was the difference. I am a fighter who never gives up. There is something that is really innate.”
The French Open champion, Halep struggled in her early two first-round matches before she managed to defeat Venus Williams in the third round.
However, against the seven times winner at Melbourne, Simona Halep was embroiled in a slugfest.
Williams is now set to face Karolina Pliskova who has maiden under the radar by far in this tournament but made it to the quarterfinals after defeating Garbine Muguruza by 6-2 and 6-1.
The 2016 US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova said, “I am feeling great and I feel the energy here is good. I feel like these conditions can be good for me.”
