Bangladesh wins over Afghanistan to strengthen their place for World Cup semis

Bangladesh has strengthened their hopes for making it to the semis of the World Cup tournament after they defeated Afghanistan with a 62-run victory in a match held at The Ageas Bowl.

With this win, Bangladesh has moved in the range of England on points who are currently at the 4th place and are holding the last spot for the semi-finals. The hosts for this year’s World Cup will be playing it out against Australian team on Tuesday at Lord.

This year, Shakib Al Hasan has been the ace in the hole for the Bangladeshi team as well as the player of the tournament. The all-rounder of the team displayed his skills again in the team’s win over Afghanistan.

Shakib scored 51 runs, which was his fifth 50 or more runs in the last 6 matches as Bangladesh set a chase target for the Afghan team at 262-7. However, it was actually Bangladesh’s bowling team that did the most damage to the opponents as they took out 5 for 29 runs in the early 10 overs to rip the batting order of Afghanistan apart.

Afghanistan, who was simply stunning in their 11-run loss against India earlier on the wakened, were not able to pull off the same stunt. Still, their captain Gulabdin Nabi scored 47 runs while Samiullah Shinwari was 49 runs for not out.

However, Bangladesh’s Mujeeb Ur Rahman who got 3 wickets while giving away 39 runs was able to hold off the Afghani batsmen in their tracks as they came short. The whole Afghanistani team bowled out at 200 runs with 3 overs to spare.

Afghanistan is still rooted into the world cup with their 7 losses in a row and their upcoming matches against Pakistan and West Indies. As for Bangladesh, they are up against India on July 2nd before playing their final game against Pakistan on June 5th.
