Bautista Agut’s victory leads Spain into quarterfinals of ATP Cup

Spain was able to make it to the quarterfinal of the ATP Cup evened earlier than Rafael Nadal could step on the court Perth Arena on Wednesday for a match.

Spain, which has won the Davis Cup with a  victory over Canada in the finals held at Madrid, is in the hunt to win their 2nd intentional title as a team in the 7 weeks time span. Their hopes for that mark are also high after Robert Bautista Agut won over Go Soeda of Japan by 6-2 and 6-4.

Japan needed to defeat Spain by 3-0 for not letting Nadal led Spain to reach the ATP Cup’s Final Eight that are going to be held in Sydney this Thursday. Nadal later helped the team by winning over Yoshihito Nishioka; the world rank no. 72 of Japan by 7-6 and 6-4.

Nadal said, “I always enjoy sharing these kinds of great moments with my friends and we had a lot of success for our entire career when we played for our country in the Davis Cup. So for our team, this is a good start and to be able to have qualified for Sydney already. The conditions are going to be very different because there is a 3-hour difference. There will be a lot of things that we need to adjust to and this period of time makes it very short for us.”

Spain, Australia, Serbia, and Russia have all entered in the knockout stages of the ATP Cup by being group winner. Australia will next face Britain for the opening match of quarterfinals to be held in Sydney at the Olympic Park Tennis Center. As for Russia, they will play against Croatia which became the winner of Group E without even hitting a ball on Wednesday.

As for the other 3 quarterfinals of the ATP Cup, they will be decided on the night of Wednesday as the six countries are still competing.
