Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is currently uncertain about the long-term captaincy of the national team. Shakib Al Hasan is the current skipper, having taken charge of the team ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.
However, since the conclusion of the World Cup, Shakib Al Hasan has been absent from the team due to an injury sustained during the tournament. He is yet to fully recover from this injury and has also expressed an interest in politics, causing him to miss recent assignments, including the two-Test series against New Zealand and the ongoing white-ball series.
In Shakib Al Hasan’s absence, Najmul Hossain Shanto has served as captain and has performed admirably. He led the team to a Test series draw against New Zealand and also secured their first-ever T20I victory against the Kiwis in New Zealand.
Given Shakib Al Hasan’s absence and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s strong performance as captain, there has been speculation about who will lead the team in the long term. However, there has been no indication of a decision yet.
Jalal Yusuf, chairman of cricket operations for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, has stated that it will be up to Shakib Al Hasan to decide if he wishes to continue as captain. He emphasized that Shakib Al Hasan is still considered the captain in all formats.
Discussion with Shakib Al Hasan – Jalal Yunus
Jalal Yunus further elaborated that the decision about Shakib Al Hasan’s captaincy will be made by the board, and they will discuss it with the all-rounder before making any decisions.
Shakib Al Hasan is expected to make a comeback to cricket soon, as he is currently undergoing rehabilitation for his injury. His future as the team’s captain remains unclear.
Bangladesh is currently competing with New Zealand in the T20I series, with the third game scheduled for December 31st. This series presents an opportunity for Bangladesh to secure their first-ever T20I series victory against New Zealand.
