Bianca Andreescu has been named as the Canadian athlete of the year 2019 and for that, she was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy. She was awarded this title and trophy for ending the 12 months season of tennis during which she became the first teenager of the country to win the Tennis Grand Slam singles titles by winning the US Open of this year.
Bianca Andreescu, who was an unknown celebrity for the last year in her home country, was able to become a superstar overnight after beating Serena Williams at their final at the flushing Meadows and then made it all the way to be the world rank no. 4.
19 years old Bianca Andreescu said of this honor, “wow, I am really thankful for this award and I was really not expecting it to be the first tennis player of Canada is also a surreal feeling. None of my achievements for this year could have been possible if there was no support from all across Canada.”
Bianca Andreescu, who has ended as the year-end no. 178th finished the season overall as world rank no. 5. She started her year by beating Caroline Wozniacki and then Venus Williams on her way to reach the final in Auckland.
Then in March, she went on to win the wildcard entry for the Indian Wells but was forced to not play in the coming 16 matches.
She is the daughter of the Romanian immigrants residing in Canada and she went on to win the hometown title in Toronto before she went on to be the winner of the US Open and denied Serena Williams to equalize the 24 Grand Slam titles record.
He other finalists for this award other than Bianca Andreescu were the sprinter named Andre De Grasse, professional golf player Brooke Henderson, MLB pitcher named Mike Soroka and the NHL goalie named Jordan Binnington.
The Lou Marsh Trophy is named after the Toronto Star’s former sports editor.
