The Kenyan runner Brigid Kosgei has broken the previous women’s marathon world record set previously by the 16 years old Paula Radcliff. Brigid Kosgei was able to defend her Chicago title by winning the marathon.
25 years old runner, Brigid Kosgei finished the marathon at the time of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 4 seconds as compared to the previous record of Radcliffe standing at 2 hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds. Radcliff set that world record at the 2003 London marathon.
Brigid Kosgei finished 6 minutes earlier as compared to the second place Ababe Yeshaneh who clocked 2 hours 20 minutes and 51 seconds while the third place went to Ethiopia’s Gelete Burka who clocked at 2 hours, 20 minute and 55 seconds.
Brigid Kosgei also became the youngest winner of a women’s marathon at the London Marathon held earlier this year. Since her winning the Chicago title back in 2018, she has now won 3 marathons and on this finish, she was congratulated by none other than the previous world record holder, Radcliffe.
As for Mo Farah representing Great Britain at the men’s marathon, he finished at 8th place having finished 4 minutes behind the current winner Lawrence Cherono, who has made 2 wins for Kenya this year.
In the last 6 marathon runs, this was the worst one for Farah since he switched to road racing back in 2017. He finished the race at the mark of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 58 seconds.
As for the winner of the race Cherono, he finished at the mark of 2 hours, 5 minutes and 45 seconds which si one minute earlier than the time of second place Asefa Mengistu.
This week of marathon runs has been a great one for Kenya as Eliud Kipchoge became the very first person in the history of marathon running to have broken the 2-hour barrier in Vienna on Saturday.
This time by the winner was not counted as official one as he was helped by 41 other pacemakers who had dropped in and out of the race.
