Brisbane International Tournament; Andy Murray beaten by Daniil Medvedev

Andy Murray’s great start of the year came to an early end after he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev at the Brisbane International.

Andy Murray, the former world no. 1 suffered the defeat by 7-5 and 6-2 in the second match of the tournament. Murray lost the match as he is still recovering from his hip surgery.

Earlier in the first round, Murray defeated James Duckworth and told media that, “it had been hard 118 months with lots of ups and downs. It has been just tricky for me to get back on the court and compete again. So I am really happy to be back out here again. I want to try and enjoy this as much as I can and just try to enjoy playing this game as long as I could. I do not know as to how much longer will it last, but we will see.”

It was in Brisbane that Murray had decided to undergo surgery for his hip. Due to surgery, he missed out on four of the Grand Slam events of the 2018 and due to this, his world ranking fell below to no. 240.

As for the first Grand Slam event of 2019, it is the Australian Open which will start of January 14th.

Murray’s defeat came after his fellow Great Britain players Kyle Edmund, Johanna Konta and Harriet Dart all lost their matches.

As for Rafael Nadal who has withdrawn himself from the Brisbane International in his bid to join the Australian Open said to media, “I did an MRI scan and it showed a small strain on my left thigh. I tried to play and wanted to play but doctors recommended me otherwise. I feel much better than I did four days ago. There is a risk to damage my body for one month if I played at Brisbane.”
