Bust-ups, off-loads and ex-pats – Prem talking points

Dean Mumm has quietly built a reputation as an unofficial ambassador for Exeter Chiefs in Australia. The former Wallabies second row spent three memorable seasons at Sandy Park, during which he developed a strong attachment to both the club and the lifestyle in Devon. His time in England left such a positive impression that he repeatedly extended his stay, enjoying the environment both on and off the field.

When Mumm returned to New South Wales Waratahs in 2015, he carried with him glowing recommendations about Exeter. Word soon spread among Australian internationals that the club offered not only competitive rugby but also an appealing lifestyle, with the scenic coastline and relaxed atmosphere of the South West proving particularly attractive.

Since then, a steady stream of Australian players has followed in his footsteps. Names like Nic White, Lachlan Turner, Scott Sio, and Len Ikitau have all made their way to Exeter, strengthening the connection between the club and Australian rugby.

Among the latest arrivals, Tom Hooper has quickly established himself as one of the standout imports. The 24-year-old back-row forward brings a combination of toughness, relentless energy, and a competitive edge that has made him a key contributor. His performances have been consistently impressive, including a recent standout display against Newcastle Falcons.

Hooper’s impact has been so significant that discussions about extending his stay have already begun. The player himself has expressed openness to remaining at Exeter for a longer period, and given his influence on the team, securing his services would likely be a priority for the club. With Exeter currently sitting fourth in the Premiership standings and holding a comfortable seven-point advantage over Bristol Bears in fifth place, the season is shaping up to be a promising one—potentially extending beyond initial expectations when Hooper first joined.

Another emerging talent making waves is Campbell Ridl. His arrival in the Premiership may not have generated as much attention initially, but circumstances have provided him with an opportunity to shine. Born in London but raised in South Africa, Ridl returned to the UK partly for academic pursuits at Exeter University. However, an injury to Immanuel Feyi-Waboso opened the door for him to showcase his abilities on the field.

Standing at an imposing 6ft 5in, Ridl combines physical presence with agility, demonstrating impressive running lines and evasive footwork. His performances have not gone unnoticed, particularly by national selectors. Having already represented England at under-20 level, he is seen as a player with considerable potential for future senior honors.

Away from the action at Exeter, one of the weekend’s most talked-about incidents occurred during a Premiership clash involving Leicester Tigers and Gloucester Rugby. The match itself was largely one-sided, with Leicester securing a convincing 36-17 victory. However, the headlines were dominated by a moment involving Leicester head coach Geoff Parling.

Before kickoff at Villa Park, tensions flared when a television presenter kicked a ball while Leicester players were warming up. Parling reacted angrily, pushing presenter Craig Doyle and expressing his frustration in a manner that was broadcast live. The incident quickly gained attention, overshadowing the match itself.

In the aftermath, all parties involved issued apologies. The broadcaster acknowledged that kicking the ball during warm-ups was inappropriate, while Parling expressed regret for his reaction. He emphasized the importance of maintaining professionalism and working collaboratively with media partners to present rugby in the best possible light.

Modern rugby coverage has increasingly embraced innovative broadcasting techniques, including mid-match interviews, behind-the-scenes access, and close-up coverage of players and coaches. While these elements add to the entertainment value, they also require careful management to ensure that boundaries are respected and relationships remain positive.

The Leicester versus Gloucester fixture also carries deeper significance, as it is played for the Ed Slater Cup. Ed Slater, a former player for both clubs, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease. The match serves as a fundraiser for his charitable foundation, which supports families affected by the condition, highlighting rugby’s strong sense of community and solidarity.

Elsewhere, fans were treated to a series of memorable moments during Northampton’s clash with Saracens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The game, part of a high-profile “Showdown” event, featured a range of skillful and entertaining plays.

Among the standout performers was Rhys Carre, whose remarkable try demonstrated his versatility and flair. Typically known as a prop forward, Carre showcased surprising agility and creativity, executing a dummy and weaving his way past defenders to score. Earlier in the match, he had also delivered an impressive offload under pressure, further underlining his technical ability.

The match also included notable contributions from players such as Tobias Elliott and Tom Lockett, as well as animated exchanges between George Furbank and referee Anthony Woodthorpe. These moments added to the spectacle, making it an engaging contest for spectators.

However, not all teams are enjoying similar success. Sale Sharks are currently enduring a difficult season. Despite a strong track record of reaching the playoffs in recent years, their current campaign has been disappointing, with only three wins from 12 league matches.

Injuries have played a significant role in their struggles, forcing players to adapt to unfamiliar positions. For example, hooker Nathan Jibulu was deployed outside his usual role during a narrow defeat to Bath. While the club has made steady recruitment plans for the upcoming season, bringing in players such as Nicky Smith, Alex Lozowski, Christ Tshiunza, and Tomas Francis, immediate results have been hard to come by.

For the club’s owners, a successful run in the European Champions Cup could provide some consolation. An upcoming all-English last-16 clash with Harlequins presents an opportunity to salvage something from the season.

The weekend also highlighted rugby’s ability to draw large crowds, with approximately 115,000 spectators attending matches across venues such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Villa Park, and Principality Stadium. These “Big Match” events play a crucial role in promoting the sport and enhancing its visibility.

One often overlooked aspect of these larger venues is the quality of lighting. Modern floodlight systems significantly enhance the viewing experience, both for fans in the stadium and those watching on television. Matches played under high-quality lighting appear more vibrant and visually appealing, contributing to the overall presentation of the sport.

Recognizing this, Premiership Rugby has indicated that lighting standards will form part of future requirements for clubs as the league moves toward a more franchise-style structure. Ensuring consistent quality across venues will be essential for maintaining the league’s commercial appeal and competitiveness.

In summary, the current Premiership rugby landscape is shaped by a mix of emerging talents, experienced leaders, and evolving challenges. From Exeter’s growing Australian influence to Sale’s struggles and the league’s efforts to enhance its presentation, the sport continues to evolve. At its core, rugby remains a game defined by passion, resilience, and a strong sense of community—qualities that continue to resonate with players and fans alike.
