Carlota Ciganda, the star from the Solheim Cup was able to achieve her first title victory at her home country Spain playing at the Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open. Ciganda got the victory by one-shot.
Ciganda had to fight through the windy conditions on the day at the Terramar course and was also able to hold off the late charge from the veteran golfer Esther Henseleit for the final day at the Sitges.
As for Laura Fuenfstueck, the overnight leader of the tournament, she had to suffer a horrible day after her start of the day was out of bounds shot on the opening tee shot. As for the second, she also made mess there as well followed by back-to-back bogeys which allowed for Ciganda to move ahead towards victory.
The Spanish golfer who played her part for the European team’s win at the Solheim Cup in Gleneagles 2 weeks ago was able to make 3 birdies along with many bogeys as well as making pars on her final 5 holes. With this, she was able to make a winning score of 8-unbder. As for the rookie Henseleit, she was able to finish as the runner up of the Ladies European Tour season.
Ciganda, for whom this is her 4th win on the LET season and the first one in the last 6 years, she said, “I am really happy to have won in Spain in between all my people. My family is all here and paying in the Spain has always been a special thing for me. It was a really tough day because there was a lot of wind along with crazy gusts on the course.
I played in a solid manner trying to make as much fairways as I could and to hit greens while making few putts. Near the end I looked and saw Esther at 6-under but I wanted to be at 10-under which my aim for the day. However, it was not at all easy to get birdies on those last final holes. In the end I am really happy to have won the tournament.”
