CONCACAF Gold Cup: Mexico wins over Costa Rica by 5-4 to reach the semifinals of the Gold Cup

In the quarterfinals match between M4exsicao and Cost Rica., Mexico was able to gain a 5-4 win over their opponents on penalty kicks. With this win, they advance to the semifinals of the Gold Cup where they will meet Haiti.

Under the lead of Raúl Jiménez, the 18th ranked Mexico was placed ahead in the 44th minute of the game while the Bryan Ruiz tied the game for the 39th ranked Costa Rica during her 52nd minute of the game before he was fouled by Luis Rodriguez.




The last penalty kick shot from Costa Rica’s Keyser Fuller was denied by Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa that allowed his team to move into the semifinals of the Gold Cup for the 7th time in a row.

The penalty kicks for Mexico were converted to goals by Luis Montes, Roberto Alvarado, Jesús Gallardo, Héctor Moreno, and Carlos Salcedo respectively while from Costa Rica’s side, the penalty kicks were converted to goals by El Tri, and Celso Borges, Elías Aguilar, Óscar Duarte, and Francisco Calvo respectively.

Martino said, “Today was a challenge for us. The reason was that we met with Costa Rica sooner than we expected and it was the first game that we had to play seriously to avoid getting sent back to Mexico.”

Earlier the 101st ranked Haiti also came over the match against Canada to win by 3-2 to set the semifinals to match against Mexico that will be held at Glendale, Arizona.
