Croatia and Japan are at 2-0 in group stage of ATP Cup, South Africa wins Group A

In the matchup of the former champion of the US Open Marin Cilic VS Kacper Zuk, the world ranks no. 448, the win of Croatia was a guarantee as Cilic won it by 7-6 and 6-4 to allow Croatia to win the Group stage of the ATP Cup.

As for Kevin Anderson, winner of the 2 grand slam events, he led South Africa to win Group A of the ATP Cup in Brisbane. With this, the hopes of SA to make it to the ATP playoffs are still in contention despite suffering an early loss to Serbia. Finally, Japan has also gained its 2nd consecutive win of the singles matches in their group of ATP Cup against Georgia, which were held in Perth.

Cilic who had a career-high of no. 3 is now at no. 38 due to his injury in the 2019 season but he has now won both of his singles matches in Sydney at the ATP Cup’s new team format.

Zuk was making his debut in the tour-level ATP Cup and tested Cilic to his limits who only gained win after converging one of the 13 break point chances.

As for Hubert Hurkacz VS Borna Coric match, Hurkacz defeated Coric by 6-2 and 6-2 but Croatia was able to win the doubles match of Nikola Mektic and Ivan Dodig VS Lukasz Kubot and Hubert Hurkacz by 6-2 and 6-1.

Cilic said, “If there is one thing that I need to pick and make it better then it is to convert breakpoints. I had a lot of them.  Otherwise, I felt that my level was really good.”

Croatia is now leading the Group E with their 2 wins and is ahead in the Group against Argentina before they play their match against Austria, which will be held in Sydney.

Japan is now 3-0 in their group of ATP Cup with a win over Uruguay and Georgia.
