David Ortiz, Former Boston Red Sox star shot in Dominican Republic

David Ortiz, the former Red Sox great was shot after a man ambushed him and shot him in the back from close range in the back last Sunday in his home city of Dominican Republic. According to the local authorities, the man got off the motorcycle and ambushed Ortiz.

Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte, the Dominican National Police Director said to media that at around 8:50 pm, Ortiz was hanging around at the Dial bar and Lounge located in Santo Domingo when he was approached by a gunman from behind who then shot him.

43 years old Ortiz was then taken to a clinic in Abel Gonzalez where a surgery was performed on him and his condition was brought to be stable. Shortly after the incident a US team arrived in the area and airlifted Ortiz back with him for treatment in Boston on Monday.




Leo, father of Ortiz, talked to the media outside the clinic said that his son was now out of danger and that the bullet has not hit any vital organs. He also said that he does not know the reason as to why someone would shoot him.

Leo said, “He is really out of danger. I have not spoken with him yet. I am only stating after what the doctors said rafter the operation.”

According to media reports, the gunman who shot Ortiz was caught and beaten by the crowd at the bar. Authorities are waiting for the man to complete his treatment before the question him.

Police are also trying to determine whether Ortiz was the real target of the gunman or not. In addition to Ortiz, two other people were hurt with one being a Dominican TV host named Jhoel Lopez who was hurt by the same bullet as Ortiz.

Lopez got shot in the leg and his injuries were not a life threatening ones as per the statement of Lopez’s wife named Liza Blanco.
