Djokovic wins over Shapovalov to lead Serbia into semis of ATP Cup

Playing at the semifinals singles match of ATP Cup from Team Serbia’s side at the Ken Rosewell Arena, Shapovalov enjoyed a full house and he felt the responsibility of giving a great match to the crowd.

There was a minute delay in the third set of the Novak Djokovic VS Denis Shapovalov ATP Semifinals match this Friday when one of the spectators needed the medical attention from the paramedic. Djokovic, who was at 0-30 while making the serve in the match, took his bottle of water over to the stadium’s seating area and asked other cord people to pass it along to paramedics.

He was then able to level the game 30-30 before he broke Shapovalov to level the set at 5-5. Shapovalov saved a breakpoint in the next game but when it went to a tiebreaker, Djokovic was able to size the control by winning the first 5 points and then to make a comeback win by 4-6, 6-1 and 7-6.

As Dusan Lajovic had won his match for Team Serbia against Felix Auger-Aliassime by 6-4 and 6-2, the victory of Djokovic had practically sealed the ATP quarterfinals win for Serbia. With this Serbia will now move into semifinals of ATP Cup where they will now play against Russia. Serbia was able to make a clean sweep of the quarterfinals by winning the doubles match as well.

Djokovic said after the match, “That was a close game and it could have gone in either direction. Denis was playing some really terrific tennis. It did not feel even a little bit that I was playing at home.”

Djokovic, who has won record 7 titles of Australasian Open, is playing for the first time here in Sydney in the last decade. The last time he played in ATP Cup here, his team reached the group stage of the ATP Cup by 3-0.

Currently, the semifinals match of team Spain and Team Belgium is being played in Australia.
