European open, Thiem defeats Cuevas and reaches the 2nd round in Hamburg

Since the time Dominic Thiem lost the French Open final against Rafael Nadal, he is back on clay and this time he won his first round match at the European Open in Hamburg against Pablo Cuves by 6-3 and 7-6 on Tuesday as he made it to the 2nd round of the tournament.

Thiem, the top seeded player of the tournament, won the 250th Toru level match of his career to set up his second round match against Martin Fucsovics of Hungary.




Thiem’s only other match since his loss against Rafael Nadal in final of French open was against Sam Querrey in the first round of Wimbledon.

In other matches of the day, the 2nd seeded player from Germany; Alexander Zverev was able to please the home crowd with his 6-4 and 6-2 win against Nicholas Jarry. Up next, Zverev will face Federico Delbonis.

As for the 3rd seeded Fabio Fognini, he was able to defeat the qualifier Julain Lentz by 6-4 and 6-4 whereas 4th seeded player Nikoloz Basilashvili beat qualifier Hugo Dellien by 6-4 and 6-3 in one hour. He will next face Juan Ignacio Londero.

Last but not least was the match between the 7th seeded Jan-Lennard Struff who struck 10 aces to win over Thiago Monteiro easily by 6-1 and 6-3.
