The Fed Cup playoff for Great Britain will be played at the Copper Box located at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in April.
The side of Anne Keothavong will play against Kazakhstan on April 20 and 21 as they will try to reach the World Group of the competition for the first time since 1993.
Earlier this month, Great Britain also hosted the Fed Cup at Bath which was actually the first time in past 25 years. In that event, they won over Europe and Africa Zone for the fifth time in the last 8 years.
Britain has almost its last 4 playoffs against other teams by draw each time. Last year’s defeat against Japan for deciding double was the most painful out of all.
For East London, this is the first time that they are hosting the International Tennis. As for Keothavong, who grew up in Hackney, this is going to be a special moment.
During an interview at the Clapton Girls Academy, she said to media, “it is very special for me to come back to my home of Hackney. Being grown up here and started applying tennis, I never dreamt that I would one day come back here and lead the British team in an event which is the World cup of Women’s tennis.”
She further said, “Looking forward to April, words are not enough to express the anticipation as we are going to play our first World Group play-off at home.”
This year’s playoff match could also be a very close one because Britain’s Johanna Konta and Katie Boulter are both evenly matched in rankings with the duo Yulia Putintseva and Zarina Diyas from Kazakhstan.
