Garbine Muguruza reaches quarterfinals of Shenzhen Open; Madison Keys wins at Brisbane International

Garbine Muguruza, the former world rank no. 1 and the winner of 2 Grand Slam events was able to win over her American opponent of Shenzhen Open, Shelby Rogers by 6-1 and 7-6. With this win, Garbine Muguruza now advances to the quarterfinals of the Shenzhen Open.

Up next, Garbine Muguruza will be playing against another quarterfinalist of Shenzhen Open Zarina Diyas who won her match against Anna Blinkova by 6-1, 6-7 and 6-4.




Garbine Muguruza said “my goal is to play as many matches as I can. So this is why I am looking forward to my next match and I hope to keep advancing in this tournament.   I have never played against Diyas so I am really looking forward to this match.”

The victory of Muguruza on Wednesday was her first back to back in at a WTA level tournament since the French Open of last year where she reached the 4th round.

Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 5th seeded layer of Shenzhen Open was able to increase her winning streak to 7 matches after defeating the finalist of 2014 Peng Shuai by 7-6 and 6-1.

Alexandrova, the Player from Russia said, “It feels really great to play here in the quarters because I am playing here for the 4th time.”

Up next, Alexandrova will have a match against Qiang Wang, the 4th seed of the event after she won over Aliaksandra Sasnovich by 6-4, 0-6 and 7-6.

Somewhere else at the Brisbane International, Madison Keys was able to win over Samantha Stosur by 7-5 and 6-3 to reach 2nd round of Brisbane International.

In other matches of Brisbane International, Alison Riske defeated Barbora Strycova by 6-3 and 6-4 while Danielle Collins defeated Yulia Putintseva by 6-1 and 6-0.

As for Ashleigh Barty, she will play her 2nd round match of Brisbane International against Jennifer Brady on Thursday.
