Garnet Hathaway of Washington Capitals gets 3-game suspension for the spitting incident

Garnet Hathaway of the NHL team Washington Capitals got the 3-game suspension from the season without pay from NHL. This punishment comes for hi getting ejected for spitting on Erik Gudbranson of the Anaheim Ducks during a melee incident that occurred in the game.

The league announced that in addition to the suspension, Garnet Hathaway will also forfeit a sum of 24193 dollars from his season pay to the Players’ emergency assistance fund.

 

During the game of Capitals VS Duck that ended with Capitals 5-2 win, a scrum suddenly broke out between the payers of two teams following a heavy hit from Brendan Leipsic of Capitals on Derek Grant of Ducks that led to a goal being made by Chandler Stephenson to give 3-0 led to the Capitals.

Garnet Hathaway then reacted into the fight before the Ducks’ Gudbranson and Nick Ritchie also intervened. Following the two players being freed from each other by the officials, Garnet Hathaway spat on Gudbranson, for which he then received a game penalty after his actions got confirmed over the replay.

 

 

Garnet Hathaway later said, “I reacted a little too emotionally and spit came out of my mouth after I got sucker punched and it went to him. It was an emotional play on my part but you do not plan such stuff beforehand. It was a fast reaction and was a wrong one from me after getting sucker punched.”

As for Gudbranson, who was really frustrated, he said, “That is about as low as one can dig a pit. It is just something that you do not do in this sport and he went on to do it.”
