Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir shared his perspective on whether captaincy impacts a player’s performance. He disagreed with the idea and used the examples of Indian cricket legends MS Dhoni and Anil Kumble to support his point.

Captaincy undoubtedly plays a significant role in cricket. The captain’s decisions can greatly influence the game and sometimes even outshine the opponents. Thanks to strong leadership, many players have achieved great success in their careers.

Cricket has seen numerous captains who have made a mark for themselves. Leading from the front is crucial for a captain, and there have been exceptional leaders who effectively managed their roles as well as their performances.

However, not everyone can handle the pressure of leadership. Some players have struggled to maintain their individual performance after taking on the captain’s role and eventually had to step down.

Despite this, Gautam Gambhir believes that captaincy does not impact a batsman’s game. He emphasizes that it depends on the individual’s mindset, citing the examples of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. In an interview with Sportskeeda, he stated:

“I don’t think being a captain affects a batter’s game. There have been many captains who have given great performances while being captains. It’s about the individual mindset. MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly, and Anil Kumble have performed well. Similarly, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have done it too”

When a captain steps out to bat, his primary job is to score runs – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir reinforced his argument by emphasizing that a captain’s primary responsibility while batting is to score runs. He pointed out that captaincy is an additional role that comes into play once a player gets out or completes their overs. He explained:

“When a captain steps out to bat, his primary job is to score runs. You are selected in the team as a batter or a bowler; captaincy is an additional responsibility given to you.

“While batting, if you’re going to think that I am the captain, the ball or the bat doesn’t know that you are the captain. You are a batter when you have the bat in your hand and a bowler when you have the ball. You become the captain when you get out or complete your over.”

Gautam Gambhir himself was a successful captain for India and Kolkata Knight Riders. He led his team to two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. He will continue to be involved with his franchise as a mentor.
