Has Aston Martin’s Newey team principal project failed? F1 Q&A

Mercedes head into the third round of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Japan with strong momentum, aiming to extend their impressive early form at the iconic Suzuka Circuit. The team has enjoyed a dream start to the campaign, with George Russell securing victory in Melbourne and dominating the sprint race in Shanghai, while rising star Kimi Antonelli claimed his maiden Grand Prix win in China at just 19 years old.

This early success has positioned Mercedes as one of the standout teams in the championship so far, raising expectations ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix. However, the race weekend carries added significance as it will be followed by an unusual five-week break in the calendar. The hiatus comes after the cancellation of races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, disrupting the traditional flow of the season.

As anticipation builds for Suzuka, several key storylines have emerged across the Formula 1 paddock, ranging from leadership changes at Aston Martin and Audi to early-season struggles at Red Bull Racing, as well as the sport’s push toward sustainable fuel technology.

One of the most talked-about developments involves the evolving leadership structure at Aston Martin, particularly following the arrival of legendary designer Adrian Newey. Newey joined the team as managing technical partner and shareholder, bringing with him a reputation as one of the most influential engineers in Formula 1 history. While his role was never officially that of team principal, his authority and expertise effectively placed him at the center of operations under team owner Lawrence Stroll.

Despite this, it was always understood that Newey’s greatest value lies in car design rather than administrative responsibilities. Managing budgets, dealing with sponsors, and overseeing personnel would divert his focus from engineering innovation—an area where he has historically delivered exceptional results. Initially, these operational duties were handled by Andy Cowell, who served as both team principal and chief executive officer.

On paper, the division of responsibilities between Newey and Cowell appeared logical. However, internal tensions reportedly developed between the two, leading to a restructuring within the team. Cowell was moved into a different position, allowing Newey to exert greater influence. While the specifics of their disagreement remain undisclosed, it became clear that only one vision would ultimately prevail.

In the background, Stroll continued searching for a senior figure capable of managing the broader operational side of the team. At one point, he was reportedly close to recruiting Christian Horner. However, Newey was opposed to working with Horner again, prompting a shift in direction. Instead, Jonathan Wheatley has emerged as a more acceptable candidate, with discussions suggesting he could take on a leadership role at Aston Martin.

These developments highlight a broader trend of instability in team management, not only at Aston Martin but also at Audi. The German manufacturer has undergone its own series of leadership changes as it prepares for its full Formula 1 entry. Initially, Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann were key figures, but internal disagreements led to both being replaced.

Audi then introduced a dual leadership model, appointing Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley to share responsibilities. However, such structures are often viewed skeptically within Formula 1, as they can lead to confusion and inefficiency. Eventually, the setup was simplified, with Binotto taking overall control of the project under Audi CEO Gernot Dollner.

Despite these adjustments, further disruption followed when Wheatley opted to leave and return to the UK, prompting another reshuffle. Both Aston Martin and Audi’s frequent leadership changes reflect a willingness to act decisively when performance falls short, but they also raise concerns about the lack of stability—an essential ingredient for long-term success in Formula 1.

Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing has encountered a challenging start to the 2026 season. Although it is still early, the team has struggled with both performance and reliability. In Australia, Max Verstappen faced difficulties after a mistake in qualifying left him starting from the back, though he managed to recover to sixth place. His teammate Isack Hadjar showed promise in qualifying but was forced to retire due to engine failure.

The situation worsened in China, where Red Bull lacked pace and balance, and Verstappen ultimately retired due to another power-unit issue. These problems are not entirely unexpected, as the team is navigating its first season as a power-unit manufacturer. However, continued struggles could reignite speculation about Verstappen’s future with the team, particularly if results do not improve.

Another major talking point this season is Formula 1’s transition to fully sustainable fuels. For the first time, the sport is using carbon-neutral fuels, marking a significant step toward environmental responsibility. These fuels are produced either from waste materials and biomass or through advanced synthetic processes that capture carbon directly from the atmosphere.

The concept behind this innovation is to create a closed carbon cycle, where the emissions produced during combustion are offset by the carbon absorbed during fuel production. While this represents a promising development, the technology is still in its early stages and remains extremely expensive. Current estimates suggest costs of around 300 euros per litre, making widespread adoption impractical for now.

Nevertheless, the potential impact on road transport is enormous. With millions of internal combustion engine vehicles still in use worldwide, affordable sustainable fuels could provide a viable alternative to full electrification. Formula 1’s investment in this area could therefore play a crucial role in shaping the future of the automotive industry.

Finally, attention has turned to the debut of Cadillac in Formula 1. The team has taken a cautious approach, deliberately setting modest expectations for its inaugural season. So far, this strategy has paid off, as it has avoided significant criticism despite being off the pace.

In qualifying, Cadillac has been several seconds slower than the leading teams, highlighting the scale of the challenge ahead. However, given the complexity of building a Formula 1 team from scratch, their performance has been considered respectable. Team principal Graeme Lowdon has emphasized that the primary goal is to establish a solid foundation and gradually improve over time.

The team benefits from experienced personnel, including technical experts like Nick Chester, but translating that expertise into consistent on-track performance will require patience. Competing at the highest level of motorsport demands not only individual talent but also seamless teamwork and operational excellence—qualities that take years to develop.

As the season progresses, the Japanese Grand Prix will provide further insight into the competitive order. While Mercedes aims to maintain its early dominance, other teams are working hard to close the gap and resolve their internal challenges. With evolving technologies, shifting leadership structures, and emerging talents, the 2026 Formula 1 season is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing in recent years.
