Hinako Shibuno secures her maiden major title at AIG Women’s British Open in Woburn

Hinako Shibuno made a birdie on her final hole of the AIG Women’s British Open to secure her first career major title win.

20 years old golfer was making her first appearance at a professional event held outside of her own country, Japan. At the 18th hole, she made a 20-foot putt to close the 4 under 68 and then made one shot to win over Lizette Salas.

Shibuno finished her week on 18 under whereas Salas only fell one shot on her bid to win her first major title as well. The American still finished second at the event held in Woburn after her final shot lipped out four feet for the final-hole birdie.

Shibuno said after her title win, “I am nervous. Even after I have won, I feel like I am going to vomit. I was nervous more on the front 9 rather than on the back 9. I was able to make a lot of birdies as well. Taking part in such a tournament was a nerve-wracking thing but I also felt like I was going to enjoy this too.”

As for the current world rank no. 1 Jin Young K, who was chasing her third major title of the career, she ended the tournament at third place while Morgan Pressel finished at 4th place ahead of the 5th place Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa.
