The heavyweight fight between Michael hunter and Alexander Povetkin ended with a splits decision draw between the two fighters on the undercard of Joshua VS Andy Ruiz Jr. Fight.
The fight was for the WBA heavyweight eliminator round and both fighters fought valiantly till the end. But it was Michael Hunter who had made considerable trouble for Alexander Povetkin more than once in these 12 rounds. Still, the ringside judges were not able to declare a clear winner for this fight in Saudi Arabia.
Hunter said, “I thought that I had done so much so back to the drawing board.”
Michael Hunter, the former cruiserweight was able to take the lead in the first round as he rocked Povetkin within the first 390 seconds of the fight and sent him hurtling towards the floor and then caught up to him with a big right.
Hunter resumed his attack strategy in the 2nd as well as he beat the experience Povetkin but the Povetkin responded with a heavy right to Hunter’s chin.
By the third round, Povetkin got the control as he unleashed his trademark hooks and in the 4th Michael Hunter targeted his opponent’s body.
A short left hook from Povetkin sent Hunter to ropes in the 5th along with a bloodied nose but Hunter was able to remain in the round till the bell was sounded.
Now halfway into the fight, Povetkin was breathing heavily but managed to remain firm in the round behind his quick jab.
Hunter responded with his trademark jabs to break the defense of Povetkin in the 7th and then landed a heavy right in the 8th round to leave 40-year-old Povetkin out of breath.
For the next few rounds, both boxers traded equal shots not doing much damage to each other but the Povetkin was wobbled suffering from 2 hooks and three rights in the penultimate round from Hunter.
Povetkin managed to land a huge right during the final round but could not end the fight. Ultimately the 2 ringside judges scored the fight as 115-113 for each fighter while the third one scored the draw of 114-114.
