Ustad Bismillah Khan [21 March, 1913 – 21 August, 2006] – The Indian musician credited with popularizing the ‘Shehnai’, a sub-continental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the ‘Shehnai’ had long held significance as a people instrument played primarily throughout conventional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its standing and bringing it to the live performance stage.
