Itauma fighting Usyk or Wardley a ridiculous conversation – Bunce
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Rising heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has been widely tipped as a future star of the division, and there is little doubt that his potential is immense. However, at this stage in his career, it would be premature to suggest that he is ready to compete against the elite names in heavyweight boxing. Conversations linking him to world-title fights against champions like Oleksandr Usyk or contenders such as Fabio Wardley seem exaggerated and unrealistic for now.

Boxing history is full of examples where young fighters—particularly in the heavyweight division—have been labeled as the “next big thing” or compared to legends, only to fall short when faced with the harsh realities of top-level competition. The hype surrounding Itauma, while understandable, risks placing unnecessary expectations on a fighter who is still developing his craft.

Looking objectively at Itauma’s professional record, which currently stands at 13 wins, there is little evidence to suggest he is ready to challenge the very best in the world today. That is not a criticism of his ability, but rather a reflection of his experience level. At just 21 years old, he is still in the early stages of his journey. In time, he may well prove capable of dominating the division—even knocking out top contenders—but that moment has not yet arrived.

One of the most encouraging aspects of Itauma’s rise is his grounded mentality. Unlike many young prospects, he does not appear to be consumed by the hype. Instead, he remains focused on improving and progressing step by step. He understands his own abilities and limitations, which is a valuable trait in a sport where overconfidence can be costly.

His current record is perfectly respectable for a fighter of his age and experience. There is no need to rush his development. The key is to match him carefully against opponents who will test different aspects of his skill set without exposing him prematurely to overwhelming challenges.

This weekend, Itauma faces Jermaine Franklin in what represents a significant step up in competition. Franklin is not just another opponent—he is a seasoned professional who can provide the kind of test Itauma needs at this stage. This matchup has been widely praised as smart matchmaking, offering the young fighter an opportunity to demonstrate his progress against a credible opponent.

Looking ahead, it is entirely possible that within the next 18 months to two and a half years, Itauma could emerge as a serious contender in the heavyweight division. If his development continues at the current pace, he may well be in a position to challenge the top names. But for now, patience is essential.

Boxing thrives on narratives and clichés, and Itauma’s story has been no exception. Tales of his early sparring sessions with established professionals while still a teenager have added to his mystique. There are even stories suggesting he would turn up to gyms straight from school, still in uniform, to spar with seasoned fighters. While some of these anecdotes may be exaggerated, they reflect the buzz that has surrounded him from a young age.

Itauma first came to wider attention during his amateur career, where he achieved considerable success. As an unbeaten amateur, he collected junior and youth titles, building a reputation as one of the most promising young fighters in the sport. Even then, there was talk of his exceptional talent and potential.

Since turning professional, he has been promoted and marketed in a way that is unusual for a heavyweight at such an early stage. This has amplified the attention on him, including comparisons to legendary figures like Mike Tyson. In particular, there was speculation that Itauma could break Tyson’s record as the youngest heavyweight world champion.

Importantly, these comparisons were not driven by Itauma himself. He has consistently avoided making bold claims or setting unrealistic targets publicly. In fact, when it became clear that breaking Tyson’s record was no longer feasible, he admitted feeling relieved. The expectation, while not necessarily a burden, was an unnecessary distraction from his development.

In terms of his professional performances, Itauma has shown clear signs of improvement. Early in his career, he went the distance in six-round fights against relatively unknown opponents such as Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko and Kevin Nicolas Espindola. Those performances, while solid, did not stand out as exceptional.

Since then, however, he has become more clinical and dangerous in the ring. His finishing ability has improved significantly, and he now looks more comfortable facing experienced opponents. His recent outing against Dillian Whyte demonstrated his growing confidence and capability.

Despite this progress, there are still unanswered questions about his abilities. He has yet to face sustained pressure from a high-level opponent. It remains to be seen how he would respond if pushed into the later rounds or if he were to encounter adversity in the ring.

For example, how would he react if an opponent absorbs his best shots and continues to press forward? How would he cope with being hurt or cut during a fight? These are scenarios that every top fighter must eventually navigate, and Itauma has not yet been tested in these situations.

This is why the fight against Franklin is so important. At 32 years old, Franklin is still in his prime and brings valuable experience. His only defeats have come against high-quality opposition, including a stronger version of Dillian Whyte and former world champion Anthony Joshua.

Moreover, Franklin is coming off an impressive victory over previously unbeaten Ivan Dychko, which further enhances his credibility as an opponent. He is durable, experienced, and capable of testing Itauma in ways that his previous opponents may not have.

If Itauma manages to defeat Franklin on points, it would be a significant achievement and a clear sign of his progress. However, if he were to stop Franklin, it would represent one of the most impressive victories of his young career and a major statement to the rest of the division.

Looking beyond this fight, the logical next step would be another test against a durable and experienced heavyweight—someone who is unlikely to be knocked out easily. A fighter like Jarrell Miller would fit that profile perfectly. Such bouts would help Itauma gain the experience needed to prepare for the highest level.

Only after successfully navigating these challenges should discussions about facing top contenders like Wardley become relevant. Rushing him into those fights too soon could be detrimental to his development.

In conclusion, while Moses Itauma’s potential is undeniable, it is crucial to manage expectations and allow him to develop at the right pace. The heavyweight division has seen many promising fighters fail to live up to early hype, and there is no need to risk a similar outcome here.

With careful matchmaking, continued improvement, and the right mindset, Itauma could very well become one of the leading figures in boxing’s most prestigious division. For now, though, the focus should remain on steady progression rather than premature title ambitions.
