The fight for the Commonwealth Featherweight title belt between Leigh Wood and Ryan Doyle, Wood managed to have an impressive stoppage victory over his opponent to retain the belt.
In the fight held in Nottingham’s Metropolitan Arena, Wood was dominating the fight from the opening bell and had his opponent bloodied by the half. He then landed a devastating left hook to leave the former champion on the canvas during eh 10th round.
Wood said of the fight, “Incredible., this was the best night of my boxing career so far and I loved every minute of it. I was feeling a bit flat in the caging room but then the crowd lifted me up. I had to box smart against him, he is a smart kid. Much credit to Ryan Doyle, he is a very very tough kid. He was fit but I had earlier put my heart and soul into the camp so he was not going to beat me tonight.”
The opening cautious round from both fighters saw Wood changing to Southpaw and back again as Doyle was fighting on the front foot.
Third saw Wood stepping up his footwork and landing his impressive hooks in the 4th to the opponent’s body and head and finishing the round with clearly being ahead on points.
Wood, the local hero in his confidence started switching his stances during the 5th and unleashed some heavy combinations to force Doyle on the ropes.
6th saw Wood opening up a huge cut over Doyle’s eye as he continued to pulverize his opponent’s body in the 7th and finally finishing the round with a flurry of punches.
Doyle who by this time was clearly trailing far behind on the points came pumped up in the 8th but Wood took a breather in the 9th.
30 years old Doyle was rocked by Wood’s left hook in the 10th followed by a flurry of punches that left him flat on the canvas from which he never recovered.
