Kyrgios and de Minaur beat Britain as Australia moves to semi of ATP Cup

An ecstatic Nick Kyrgios picked up his teammate Ale de Minaur on his shoulder as he took him off the court after they won their ATP Cup match. Well, the celebration was fair enough.

20 years old de Minaur had spent nearly 5 hours on the court during his back-to-back matches playing for team Australia in ATP Cup quarterfinals. Earlier he lost his singles match, which took 3 hours and 23 minutes to finish, against Britain’s Dan Evans but then was able to save 4 match points as he won the deciding doubles match in the super tiebreaker round with Nick Kyrgios to beat Britain at quarters of ATP Cup.

With 2-1 victory of Australia, they now have the 1st spot in the semifinals of the revamped international ATP Cup. These victories came at just the right time when Australia is in dire need of good news as the country suffers from the devastating bushfires. These bushfires, since September, have taken the lives of 26 people and nearly 500 million animals along with the destruction of 2000 homes.

Residents of towns around South Sydney were being evacuated as the quarterfinals match of the ATP Cup was played in Sydney.

At the Ken Rosewall Arena which is located at the Sydney Olympic Park, it felt as if the arena was a soccer stadium; filled with all sorts of noises and chants from the crowd towards the home team.

Earlier in his singles match, Nick Kyrgios gave Australia a lead following his 6-2, and 6-2 victory over Cameron Norrie while de Minaur lost to Evans. This meant that the result of the quarterfinals between these two teams depended upon the doubles match.

Lleyton Hewitt, the captain for the Australia team sent his two singles players back on the court in a gamble to play the decisive doubles. They were up against the pair which had Andy Murray; the winner of 2 major titles in doubles division, and Joe Salisbury. Still, both Kyrgios and de Minaur emerged victorious in this match.
