Liverpool agree £60m deal for defender Jacquet

Liverpool have taken a decisive step toward strengthening their defensive future after reaching an agreement with Rennes for highly rated centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. The deal, worth a total of £60 million, will see the French defender join the Merseyside club in the summer rather than the current transfer window.

The agreement is understood to consist of an initial £55m transfer fee, with a further £5m in performance-related add-ons. The move remains subject to a successful medical, but there is widespread confidence that the transfer will be completed without complications.

At just 20 years old, Jacquet is considered one of the most promising young defenders in Europe. Liverpool’s long-term interest in the player reflects their strategy of investing early in elite-level talent capable of developing into a cornerstone of the team.

Summer Arrival Confirmed

Although Liverpool moved quickly to secure Jacquet’s signature, the defender will remain at Rennes until the end of the season. Both clubs agreed that the move would be completed in the summer window, allowing the French side to retain a key player during a crucial stage of their campaign.

From Liverpool’s perspective, delaying the transfer also ensures Jacquet arrives with additional first-team experience, having already played a significant role in Rennes’ defensive setup this season.

The France Under-21 international is not expected to face any issues in agreeing personal terms, with sources indicating that discussions over salary and contract length have been straightforward.

Chelsea Interest Fades

Liverpool were not alone in their pursuit of Jacquet. Chelsea held talks with the defender earlier in the winter window, exploring the possibility of a deal as they continue to reshape their squad with young talent.

However, it is understood that Chelsea were unwilling to match Liverpool’s financial package, effectively withdrawing from the race. The Reds’ willingness to commit a substantial fee highlighted how highly they rate Jacquet’s potential.

With multiple European clubs monitoring the situation, Liverpool’s swift action ensured they avoided a prolonged bidding war.

Defensive Reinforcements a Priority

The signing aligns closely with Liverpool’s ongoing plans to reinforce their defensive unit. Ibrahima Konaté’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, creating uncertainty over the club’s long-term options at centre-back.

While Konaté remains an important figure in Arne Slot’s squad, Liverpool are keen to plan ahead rather than react late. Jacquet is viewed as a player who can be gradually integrated, learning alongside established defenders before taking on a more prominent role.

This proactive approach reflects lessons learned from previous transfer windows, where missed opportunities forced Liverpool to pivot late in the market.

Lessons From Past Misses

Liverpool’s focus on Jacquet also comes after disappointment last summer, when they failed to land Marc Guéhi. The England international later opted to join Manchester City in January, leaving Liverpool without a major defensive reinforcement they had hoped to secure.

Determined not to repeat that scenario, the club moved early and decisively this time, identifying Jacquet as a long-term solution rather than a short-term fix.

Arne Slot, preparing for his first full season in charge, is believed to have approved the move, valuing Jacquet’s composure on the ball, positional awareness and ability to play in a high defensive line.

Rising Through the Rennes Ranks

Jacquet is a product of the Rennes academy, a system known for producing top-level talent. His progression through the youth ranks has been steady rather than rushed, allowing him to develop physically and tactically before stepping into senior football.

This season, he has made 18 appearances across competitions, with a series of commanding performances drawing attention from scouts across Europe. His calmness under pressure and maturity beyond his years have stood out, especially in high-intensity Ligue 1 fixtures.

Despite his age, Jacquet has shown leadership qualities, regularly organizing the defensive line and displaying confidence in one-on-one situations.

Why Liverpool Rate Him So Highly

Liverpool’s recruitment team reportedly see Jacquet as an ideal fit for the Premier League. Standing tall, strong in aerial duels and comfortable in possession, he matches the physical and technical demands of English football.

His ability to progress the ball from the back aligns with Slot’s tactical philosophy, which emphasizes controlled build-up play and defensive stability.

Rather than expecting immediate stardom, Liverpool view Jacquet as a long-term investment—a player who can develop into a regular starter over the next few seasons while benefiting from the club’s coaching structure and competitive environment.

A Smart Move for Rennes Too

From Rennes’ perspective, the deal represents excellent business. Retaining Jacquet until the end of the season allows them to maintain defensive continuity while securing a significant financial return in the summer.

The transfer fee will also provide Rennes with flexibility in the market, enabling them to reinvest in both youth development and first-team reinforcements.

Allowing Jacquet to complete the season also supports his development, ensuring he arrives at Liverpool with momentum and confidence rather than mid-season disruption.

Looking Ahead

As Liverpool prepare for a new era under Arne Slot, the capture of Jeremy Jacquet sends a clear message about the club’s ambitions. Rather than relying solely on short-term solutions, the Reds are once again placing trust in youth, planning for sustained success rather than quick fixes.

With competition at the highest level both domestically and in Europe, squad depth and succession planning remain critical. Jacquet’s arrival next summer could prove to be a defining piece of Liverpool’s defensive rebuild.
