Man Utd are closing in on Champions League – how has Carrick done it?

When Jason Wilcox, the director of football at Manchester United, addressed the squad following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on 5 January, his message was both clear and purposeful. Despite the managerial change and uncertainty surrounding the club, Wilcox emphasized that the objective for the season remained unchanged—qualifying for the Champions League.

This declaration carried weight, especially considering that the club’s earlier expectations, both internally and publicly, were more modest. Returning to European competition—likely through the Europa League—had been viewed as a realistic aim. By raising the bar to Champions League qualification, Wilcox signaled that the club would not allow the season to drift into mediocrity following Amorim’s departure.

The decision also reflected lessons learned from previous instability. Memories of Ralf Rangnick’s difficult interim spell after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in 2021 were still fresh. That period had been marked by inconsistency, confusion, and a lack of direction. Wilcox was determined to avoid a repeat, stressing the importance of focus, accountability, and professionalism during the transition.

At the time of the managerial change, United were not in a disastrous position. Following a brief interim spell by Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick took charge on 13 January. The team had lost only once in nine Premier League matches and sat just one point behind fifth place. However, there were underlying concerns. Draws against struggling sides such as Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley suggested a lack of cutting edge, and difficult fixtures against title contenders loomed.

Given their precarious position—only six points above 15th-placed Bournemouth—there were fears that United could slip into the bottom half of the table by the end of January. Instead, the opposite occurred. As the team prepares to resume league action against Leeds at Old Trafford on 13 April, they find themselves firmly in contention for a Champions League spot.

Assuming England secures five qualification places, a strong finish—comprising four wins and a draw from their remaining seven matches—could be enough to secure a return to Europe’s elite competition. Achieving this would mark a significant milestone, as it would represent only the club’s fifth top-three finish since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

So how did this turnaround happen?

On the surface, the changes made by Carrick appear straightforward yet effective. He abandoned Amorim’s three-at-the-back system, reverting to a more familiar formation. Captain Bruno Fernandes was pushed into a more advanced attacking role, allowing him to influence games more directly. Meanwhile, young talent Kobbie Mainoo was reinstated alongside the experienced Casemiro in midfield, creating a balanced and dynamic partnership.

Consistency has been a hallmark of Carrick’s approach. Across his first 10 matches in charge, he made minimal changes to the starting lineup. Only six alterations were introduced, two of which were forced by injuries to key defenders such as Lisandro Martinez. This stability allowed players to build chemistry and confidence, contributing to improved performances on the pitch.

Rotation has also been less of a necessity due to a relatively light fixture schedule. With extended gaps between matches, Carrick has been able to prioritize preparation and recovery without overburdening his squad. This has ensured that key players remain fit and available for selection.

However, Carrick’s influence extends beyond tactics and team selection. One of the most notable changes has been the atmosphere within the club. Sources close to the team describe a sense of calm and unity that has replaced the tension of previous months. Carrick’s composed demeanor has played a significant role in fostering this environment.

Unlike Amorim, who was known for his emotional reactions, Carrick maintains a measured and steady approach. His calmness is evident in his interactions with the media, where he avoids confrontational or dramatic responses. This attitude has had a ripple effect throughout the club, influencing both players and staff.

Training methods have also undergone adjustments. Carrick has opted to simplify sessions, focusing on fundamental aspects of the game rather than prolonged and intensive drills. While some critics have questioned the shorter training sessions, Carrick believes that quality and clarity are more important than duration. By emphasizing core principles, he aims to ensure that players perform with greater intent and efficiency.

Behind the scenes, the coaching staff have played a vital role in the team’s progress. Jonathan Woodgate and Jonny Evans have concentrated on defensive organization, while Travis Binnion has worked closely with the attacking players. The addition of Steve Holland has been particularly influential, bringing experience and strategic insight to the coaching setup.

The results speak for themselves. Since Carrick took charge, United have collected 23 points from 10 Premier League matches—the highest tally in the league during that period. Victories against strong opponents, including Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, have demonstrated the team’s ability to compete at the highest level.

These performances have also strengthened Carrick’s case for being appointed as the permanent manager. While the club’s hierarchy remains cautious and is not rushing into a decision, the lack of viable alternatives has further enhanced his position. Potential candidates such as Roberto De Zerbi may become unavailable or less attractive options, leaving Carrick as a leading contender.

Nevertheless, questions remain about his long-term suitability. Managing a full season, potentially involving up to 60 matches, presents different challenges compared to the current campaign, which has benefited from a lighter schedule. Additionally, the club’s leadership—including Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada—faces pressure to make the right appointment after previously backing Amorim.

Despite these uncertainties, the trajectory of the team under Carrick has been undeniably positive. The players appear united, motivated, and confident in their abilities. If United maintain their current form and secure Champions League qualification, it would be difficult for the club to overlook Carrick’s achievements.

In conclusion, Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick highlights the importance of stability, clarity, and effective leadership. From a period of uncertainty following Amorim’s departure, the club has emerged as a strong contender for a top-four finish. While the final decision on the managerial position remains pending, Carrick’s impact has placed him firmly in contention for the role on a permanent basis.
