Mumbai Indians have added Sri Lankan pacer Nuwan Thushara to their team for 4.40 crores in the IPL 2024 auction. Thushara, who has a bowling action similar to Lasith Malinga, has previously played in the Lankan Premier League, the Abu Dhabi T10 League, and the Sri Lankan national cricket team.
In addition to Nuwan Thushara, Mumbai Indians also secured the services of Dilshan Madushanka for 4.60 crores and South African rising star Gerald Coetzee for 5 crores. The trio of pacers is seen as the next generation of Mumbai Indians alongside Jasprit Bumrah.
The head coach of Mumbai Indians expressed his satisfaction with the pace attack acquired in the IPL 2024 auction, stating that they were able to sign Coetzee and Madushanka for a relatively low price than expected. “We were surprised that we got both of them at a very cheap price. We are really happy with the two international picks we have gotten so far,” said the coach.
Regarding the acquisition of Dilshan Madushanka, the coach mentioned that the decision was based on his recent performances, particularly in the World Cup where he was the highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka, with 21 wickets.

He described Thushara as a young and promising bowler with the ability to swing the new ball and deliver effective change-ups at the death. The coach also mentioned the unorthodox bowling action of Nuwan Thushara, referring to it as an X-factor for the team. He noted that Malinga, the new fast bowling coach for Mumbai Indians, also has experience working with Thushara and has seen him bowl from close quarters.
