The NZ vs BAN T20I series is well poised after Bangladesh’s win in the first T20I in Napier. New Zealand now needs to win the second T20I to level the series. A win for Bangladesh will mean a historic T20I series win on New Zealand shores. The last two matches will be played in Mount Maunganui starting from 11.40 am IST. The second T20I is on December 29, Friday.
Bangladesh defeated New Zealand twice in four days. They won the third ODI on December 23 and won their first T20I win in New Zealand on December 27. This has been some turnaround by The Tigers who lost the first two games to start the series.
Bangladesh first restricted New Zealand to 134/9 with the ball. Their boalers shared the wickets between themselves with Shoriful Islam taking three and Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi Hasan taking two each.
With the bat, Litton Das anchored the chase with an unbeaten 42 off 36 balls. The others played around him with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Towhid Hridoy, and Mahedi Hasan scoring 19 each. Soumya Sarkar scored 22.
Bangladsh’s performance with the ball especially in the last two games has taken cricket experts by surprise. They have made the best use of the conditions getting the ball to do enough to pose problems for the Kiwi batters. James Neesham top scored with 48 for New Zealand Mitchell Santner scored 23 while none of the other batters scored over 20 in a strange-looking scorecard.
This sets up the series beautifully for an exciting finish with Bangladesh’s smelling victory. After a forgetful performance in the World Cup, where they finished ninth this performance so far should give confidence to the side to go for the kill.
Bangladesh made a tour to New Zealand after New Zealand toured Bangladesh first before the
World Cup
for an ODI series and then after the World Cup for a Test series. The Kiwis won the ODI series 2-1 and drew the Test series 1-1. The Tigers now have a chance to upset the Kiwis at home by winning the T20I series after an ODI series loss earlier.

Bangladesh will be led by Nazmul Hossain Shanto. The side is without their senior players Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, and Mushfiqur Rahim. While Tamim is not a part of the side since the World Cup, Shakib is currently interested in starting a career in politics. He recently pulled out of the IPL 2024 auction as well. They have an inexperienced batting lineup with Litton Das and Soumya Sarkar the only two experienced batters. Mahmudullah who played the World Cup is also not a part of the T20I side.
New Zealand will be led by Mitchell Santner. Kane Williamson and Kyle Jamieson have been rested from this T20I series with New Zealand lined up to play Test matches against Australia and South Africa next year. This is an opportunity for Rachin Ravindra to bat up the order with Fin Allen with Devon Conway also rested. Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, and Adam Milne form the bowling core alongside Santner.
