Rashid takes unusual 700th wicket as Afghanistan beat UAE

In a thrilling Group D clash of the Men’s T20 World Cup at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, Afghanistan kept their hopes alive of progressing further in the tournament with a dramatic five-wicket victory over United Arab Emirates. The game was notable not only for the victory but also for a historic milestone achieved by Afghanistan’s captain, leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who claimed his 700th T20 wicket in a rare and unusual fashion.

Afghanistan’s win came after UAE posted a competitive total of 160-9 in their allotted 20 overs. Sohaib Khan top-scored for the hosts with an aggressive 68 from 48 balls, hitting six boundaries and four sixes, while Alishan Sharafu contributed 40 runs off 31 deliveries. Despite these contributions, UAE’s innings was ultimately restricted by Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling attack, led by all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who recorded stunning figures of 4-15, and Rashid, who conceded just 24 runs from his four overs.

The game also saw Rashid Khan achieve a landmark that few could have anticipated. Claiming his 700th T20 wicket, the Afghan star did so in unusual circumstances: a hit wicket. UAE batter Muhammad Arfan attempted a reverse sweep against Rashid in the 15th over but inadvertently clipped the stumps with his bat. While Rashid had taken 699 wickets in his T20 career previously, this mode of dismissal was entirely new to his record. The wicket marked his 191st in T20 internationals, and when combined with his 509 victims in domestic List A T20 competitions, made him the first player to reach this incredible milestone. Notably, this remains the only wicket Rashid has claimed in 11,794 balls bowled via hit wicket in T20 cricket, highlighting the rarity of the achievement.

Afghanistan’s chase began shakily, as they lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck early in the innings. However, fellow opener Ibrahim Zadran steadied the innings with a composed 53 from 41 balls, laying the foundation for a successful pursuit. His calm approach ensured Afghanistan remained in contention despite occasional breakthroughs from the UAE bowlers, particularly Muhammad Arfan, who finished with figures of 2-30.

As the chase progressed, Omarzai’s brilliance with both ball and bat became increasingly evident. After dismantling the UAE batting order earlier, he returned to anchor Afghanistan’s run chase, striking an unbeaten 40 from just 21 balls. His all-round performance proved decisive as Afghanistan crossed the finish line with four balls to spare, securing crucial points in the group. The victory brought Afghanistan onto the scoreboard in Group D for the first time, although their advancement to the Super 12s remains contingent on the final round of fixtures.

For Afghanistan to advance, they must defeat New Zealand in their last group match and ensure that their net run rate surpasses both New Zealand and UAE. Likewise, the UAE, who also hold two points, need a victory against South Africa in their final fixture and must rely on superior net run rate calculations to secure a spot ahead of their rivals. This intricate scenario sets up a nail-biting conclusion to the group stage, with every run, wicket, and over likely to be critical.

The T20 World Cup continues to showcase the dramatic and unpredictable nature of the format, and Afghanistan’s performance in Delhi demonstrates how individual brilliance and collective effort can combine to produce unforgettable moments. Rashid Khan’s milestone is a testament not only to his skill as a leg-spinner but also to his longevity and consistency in the shortest format. Few cricketers have made such an impact across international and domestic competitions, and the hit-wicket dismissal serves as a quirky yet historic footnote to his record.

Omarzai’s performance further underlines Afghanistan’s growing depth in T20 cricket. The all-rounder’s ability to influence the game both with the bat and the ball makes him a critical asset for the team, particularly in high-pressure World Cup situations. His figures of 4-15 and 40 not out exemplify the value of versatility in T20 cricket, where matches can turn in just a few overs and individual contributions often decide outcomes.

The UAE’s innings had promising moments, particularly Sohaib Khan’s aggressive stroke play, which kept the scoreboard ticking and injected momentum into the innings. Sharafu’s 40 runs also provided some resistance. However, the UAE could not consistently maintain the required scoring rate against Afghanistan’s disciplined bowling attack. Rashid’s ability to maintain pressure and create wickets at key moments proved crucial in preventing UAE from posting a more challenging total.

As the tournament progresses, both Afghanistan and UAE will need to navigate tense scenarios, including net run rate calculations and the need for victories in must-win games. Afghanistan, historically a rising force in T20 cricket, continue to show their resilience and capability to compete against strong opponents. Their performance against UAE reinforces their reputation as a team capable of producing dramatic finishes and handling the pressure of crucial matches.

In conclusion, Afghanistan’s five-wicket win over UAE in Delhi provided not just three points but a reminder of the unpredictability and excitement of the T20 World Cup. Rashid Khan’s 700th wicket, taken in such unusual circumstances, added an unforgettable moment to cricketing history. Omarzai’s all-round brilliance and Zadran’s steady innings ensured the team secured a vital victory. With final group-stage matches still to be played, both Afghanistan and UAE face must-win scenarios that will test their skill, strategy, and composure.
