Cristiano Ronaldo was finally able to take his international goal tally to 99 goals after he scored that goal for Portugal playing in the qualifiers for the European Championship 2020 against Luxembourg. This goal was the winning one for the games that ended with a 2-0 victory for Portugal.
The star from Juventus was able to tap in a shot after getting a pass from Diogo Jota that was only a few inches from the goal line during the 86th minute of the game. The nudge from Diogo left him without hi 1st international goal and for Ronaldo to be only one goal short from having hit the century goal mark.
The first goal for Portugal was made by Bruno Fernandes during the 39th minute after getting a long pass from Bruno Silva.
Before this first goal, Luxembourg was outplaying Portugal as they dealt with poor conditions of the field to defend better against the defending champions of the European Championship.
This win allows for Portugal to be advancing in the Group B for the European Championship 2020. As for the group winner Ukraine, it has already moved up into the qualifiers as the winner of the group.
Fernandes said, “Given the conditions, our performance was really great. We were aware that this game would be based on quantity rather than quality. We battled really hard in this match and that helped us to get the win.”
Prior to this game, Ronaldo had scored a hat trick in the 6-0 shutout win of Portugal against Lithuania but in this game against Luxembourg, he was kept in check heavily.
As for Serbia, they were able to have a 2-2 draw against the group leader Ukraine to finish at 3rd place in the group. Serbia still holds a chance to make it to the European Championship 2020 with the playoffs.
For group B; Ukraine topped the group with its 20 points while Portugal ahs 17 points and Serbia finished with 14 points. As for Luxembourg, they have 4 points and Lithuania has only 1 point.
