Rookie Knueppel races to NBA three-pointer record

Rookie sensation Kon Knueppel etched his name into the NBA record books after becoming the fastest player in league history to reach 200 three-pointers, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a dominant 131-99 victory over the Chicago Bulls. The 20-year-old guard delivered an impressive performance, scoring 21 points and knocking down three shots from beyond the arc, as the Hornets continued their strong run with an emphatic road win.

Knueppel’s milestone came in just 58 games, a remarkable achievement that underlines his rapid rise in the NBA. This record-breaking pace surpassed the previous mark held by Duncan Robinson, who had needed 69 games to reach the same figure. By achieving the feat 11 games quicker, Knueppel has not only showcased his elite shooting ability but also demonstrated the consistency that has made him one of the standout rookies of the season.

The young guard is now only the second rookie in NBA history to reach 200 three-pointers in a single campaign, further highlighting the rarity of his accomplishment. With a league-leading tally of 201 made three-pointers, he is also closing in on another historic benchmark. He now needs just six more three-pointers to surpass Keegan Murray’s rookie record of 206, set during the 2022-23 season with the Sacramento Kings. If he maintains his current form, it appears increasingly likely that Knueppel will break that record before the end of his debut season.

The Hornets’ convincing win over the Bulls was a collective team effort, with Brandon Miller also playing a crucial role. Miller added 23 points, providing offensive support that helped Charlotte control the game from start to finish. The team’s attacking fluidity and sharp perimeter shooting overwhelmed Chicago, who struggled defensively and failed to find any rhythm throughout the contest.

For the Bulls, the defeat marked a worrying milestone, as it extended their losing streak to 10 consecutive games. This is their longest run of defeats since the 2018-19 season, reflecting the challenges they have faced in maintaining competitiveness this year. Despite moments of individual effort, the team was unable to match the Hornets’ energy, pace, and accuracy from long range.

Knueppel’s journey to this historic achievement has been both rapid and impressive. Before entering the NBA, he played college basketball for the Duke Blue Devils, where he built a reputation as a reliable shooter and intelligent playmaker. His strong collegiate performances led to him being selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. Since then, he has quickly adapted to the professional level, showing maturity beyond his years and a fearless approach in high-pressure situations.

Hornets head coach Charles Lee expressed admiration for Knueppel’s attitude and work ethic following the game. He described the rookie as both exciting and refreshing to coach, praising not only his talent but also his humility and team-first mindset. According to Lee, having a player who combines elite skill with a grounded personality has had a positive impact on the entire team culture. He noted that Knueppel’s humble approach and lack of ego have become contagious within the organisation, helping to foster a strong and unified locker room environment.

The Hornets’ victory also marked their eighth consecutive win on the road, a significant achievement that signals their growing confidence away from home. Strong performances from young players, combined with effective coaching strategies, have allowed the team to maintain momentum during a demanding stretch of the season. Their offensive efficiency, particularly from three-point range, has become a defining feature of their recent success.

Elsewhere in the league, veteran guard James Harden made an impact for the Cleveland Cavaliers as they secured a 109-94 win over the New York Knicks. Harden, who recently joined Cleveland after leaving the Los Angeles Clippers earlier in the month, contributed 20 points in the victory. His experience and leadership were evident as the Cavaliers returned to winning form after a challenging period.

The result was significant for the Eastern Conference standings, as the Cavaliers moved level with the Knicks on a record of 37 wins and 22 losses. Both teams are currently battling for strong playoff positioning, with the Knicks sitting in third place in the conference. Harden, an 11-time NBA All-Star widely regarded as one of the greatest guards of his generation, continues to chase his first NBA championship despite a decorated individual career.

Following the win, Harden emphasised the importance of team development and continuous improvement. He stated that the squad is focused on building something special and sees each game as an opportunity to progress. The victory over the Knicks, he added, represented a positive step in that direction and a confidence boost for the team moving forward.

The Boston Celtics also strengthened their standing in the Eastern Conference with a solid 97-81 victory against the Phoenix Suns. Their disciplined defence and efficient scoring ensured control of the game, allowing them to consolidate second place in the conference rankings. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers delivered an offensive masterclass in their 135-114 win over the Indiana Pacers. Despite having reached the NBA Finals last year, the Pacers now find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, highlighting a dramatic shift in fortunes this season.

In the Western Conference, leaders Oklahoma City Thunder continued their impressive campaign by defeating the Toronto Raptors 116-107. Their consistent performances have kept them at the top of the standings, showcasing a balanced roster capable of delivering under pressure. The Los Angeles Lakers, currently placed sixth in the conference, suffered a narrow 110-109 defeat to the Orlando Magic in a tightly contested encounter that was decided in the closing moments.

Another thrilling matchup saw the Minnesota Timberwolves edge past the Portland Trail Blazers with a 124-121 victory. The closely fought game reflected the competitive nature of the Western Conference, where playoff positions remain fiercely contested as the season progresses.

Knueppel’s record-breaking achievement stands out as one of the most remarkable individual stories of the season. Achieving such a milestone as a rookie is rare, particularly in an era where defensive intensity and game speed are at an all-time high. His ability to adapt quickly, maintain shooting accuracy, and perform consistently has drawn praise from analysts, coaches, and fans alike.

Beyond statistics, his influence extends to the team’s overall performance. His scoring threat forces opposing defences to stretch, creating more opportunities for teammates and improving the Hornets’ offensive spacing. This tactical advantage has played a key role in their recent success and growing reputation as an exciting young team.

As the season continues, all eyes will remain on Knueppel as he closes in on the rookie three-point record. Breaking that mark would further cement his place among the league’s brightest young talents and could potentially place him in contention for Rookie of the Year honours.

For the Hornets, the combination of emerging young stars and strong team chemistry offers optimism for the future. Their recent performances suggest a team building momentum at the right time, with players stepping up in crucial moments and delivering consistent results.

Knueppel’s historic pace, combined with Charlotte’s impressive road form and the league’s ongoing competitive battles, has made this stage of the NBA season particularly captivating. Whether he ultimately breaks the rookie three-point record or not, his debut campaign has already secured a place in NBA history and signalled the arrival of a new elite shooter in the league.
