A graphic detailing KL Rahul’s career statistics in Test matches displayed on the screen on Day 2 of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Centurion, when he was in his 80s. In 48 games, 2743 runs were scored at an average of 34.28. In a commentary, Ravi Shastri stated, “He would be the first one to admit that he has to be more consistent in this format.” The former head coach of India was exactly right. Rahul’s stats don’t do him justice.

They are also the key reason he has been omitted from the Test team twice in the previous three years. He would have remained in the wilderness in this format if it weren’t for an injury to regular keeper Rishabh Pant  and a few underwhelming performances by KS Bharat.

KL Rahul’s brilliant performance kept India in a strong position following which batting legend Sachin Tendulkar tweeted:

Rahul showed up for the first Test in the series against South Africa on Boxing Day was a blockbuster like everyone had anticipated. Rahul batted at No. 6 for the second time in his Test career and reached a career-high after smashing 101 off 137 balls in the most trying conditions summing up India’s total to 245.
