Serena Williams wins a title after 3 years at ASB Classic and donates the $43K prize check for victims of Australian wildfires

Serena Williams was finally able to end her title drought of about 3-year long after she won over her final opponent Jessica Pegula by 6-3 and 6-4.

Serena Williams has not won any tennis title since the 2017’s Australia open in the single division and also not since she gave birth to her daughter Olympia. This tie, Olympia was also present on courtside to see her mommy win.

Now the 23 times major winner is going to donate her first-place winner prize sum of 43000 dollars to the fundraiser for helping the victims of the Australian Bushfires. With this, Serena Williams has joined the list of many tennis stars like Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios, Ashleigh Barty, and Maria Sharapova. They have also donated money to the fire emergency occurring in Australia for the last few months.

Serena Williams, whilst playing against her 25 years old opponent, was under immense pressure in her third final of the WTA event. Still, she managed to assert herself more and she ultimately claimed the 98th final win and also to add the same trophy which her sister Venus Williams had won back in 2015.

Williams said, “It felt really good to win a title. It has been a long time. I think the relief can be seen on my face. I was able to play a great opponent in the form of Jessica today. Honestly speaking, it was a great match and I could not have had played anyone better than her in the final.”

For the past 3 years, Serena Williams had been dealing with the demands of being a mother as well as a tennis player. She had been frequently behind in the matches here too but still showed that determination, which is what has made her who she is, as she was able to overcome Pegula. Pegula had made it to finals after defeating the former world rank no. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in their semifinals match.”
