Shades of Gascoigne – the rise of England’s Anderson
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Just a few years ago, Elliot Anderson was playing a crucial role in helping Bristol Rovers secure promotion from League Two. Fast forward to today, and the talented midfielder is emerging as one of the most promising players in English football, with growing expectations that he could play a significant part for the national team at this summer’s World Cup.

Now representing Nottingham Forest, the 23-year-old has developed into a key figure under England manager Thomas Tuchel. His rapid rise is reflected in his recent international involvement, having started five of England’s last seven matches. This is particularly notable given that just three years ago, he was being considered for international duty with Scotland.

England are set to face Japan national football team at Wembley in an upcoming fixture, part of their preparations for the World Cup. Anderson is expected to feature prominently in this match after being rested for the previous game against Uruguay. With the tournament approaching, these fixtures are crucial in solidifying England’s squad and tactical approach.

Anderson’s journey to this point has been both unique and impressive. Due to his Glasgow-born grandmother, he was eligible to represent Scotland national football team and was even selected by manager Steve Clarke for a Euro 2024 qualifier against Cyprus. However, an untimely injury prevented him from making his debut, and he later committed his international future to England.

That decision proved to be a turning point in his career. Anderson went on to play a vital role in England’s triumph at the European Under-21 Championship. Although Harvey Elliott was named player of the tournament after scoring six goals, Anderson’s contributions did not go unnoticed. His performances earned him a place in the tournament’s best XI, highlighting his importance to the team.

Operating in midfield alongside Alex Scott, Anderson provided stability and energy throughout the competition. His work rate and ability to cover ground were particularly evident in the quarter-final victory over Spain, where he played a decisive role. His composure under pressure was also demonstrated when he converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure England’s progression to the semi-finals.

England went on to defeat the Netherlands before successfully defending their title in Bratislava. For Anderson, this tournament served as a platform to showcase his abilities on a larger stage and build confidence heading into the next phase of his career.

Returning to club football, Anderson carried his strong form into what has been a challenging season for Nottingham Forest. The club has experienced instability, with multiple managerial changes and a constant battle against relegation. Despite these difficulties, Anderson has been a consistent and reliable presence in the team.

One of his standout performances came in a crucial 3-0 victory against Tottenham Hotspur. In that match, Anderson demonstrated his all-around abilities by creating the most chances, completing the highest number of passes, winning possession more times than any teammate, and making the most tackles. His influence was instrumental in helping Forest secure a vital win that moved them away from the relegation zone.

Beyond his on-field contributions, Anderson’s attitude and professionalism have impressed coaches and staff. He is known for his willingness to engage with coaching staff, seeking feedback and constantly looking for ways to improve his game. This dedication to development has been a key factor in his rapid progression.

His positional awareness has also drawn praise, although his relentless work rate sometimes leads him to expend a significant amount of energy during matches. While this can occasionally result in fatigue, it is generally seen as a positive trait that reflects his commitment and determination.

At Nottingham Forest, there is a strong belief that Anderson has the potential to become a complete midfielder. His combination of technical ability, physical endurance, and tactical understanding makes him a valuable asset for both club and country.

Reflecting on his journey, Anderson acknowledged the significant growth he has experienced over the past two years. His move from Newcastle United to Nottingham Forest in 2024 for £35 million was a major step in his career. Leaving his hometown was not an easy decision, but he believes it was necessary for his development.

The move has certainly paid off, providing him with the opportunity to play regularly and establish himself in the Premier League. Anderson expressed satisfaction with his progress, both as a player and as a person, and credited the club for giving him the platform to succeed.

His impressive performances have naturally attracted attention from other clubs. Manchester City are reportedly among those interested in signing him, particularly after he scored against them earlier in the season. Despite the speculation, Anderson remains focused on his current responsibilities, emphasizing his commitment to Nottingham Forest.

On the international stage, Anderson continues to build his reputation. He made his senior debut for England in a match against Andorra and is expected to earn his seventh cap in the upcoming game against Japan. While he hopes to become a regular fixture in the national team, he acknowledges the level of competition for places.

England’s squad is filled with talented players, and maintaining a position requires consistent performances at both club and international levels. Anderson understands the importance of continuing to deliver strong displays in the Premier League and European competitions to secure his place.

Statistically, Anderson’s contributions this season have been impressive. He ranks among the top players in the Premier League for passes completed, with over 2,000 passes at a high success rate. He has also excelled in defensive aspects, leading the league in possession recoveries and ground duels won.

Additionally, his ability to carry the ball over long distances places him among the best in the league in this category. These metrics highlight his versatility and effectiveness as a midfielder, capable of contributing in multiple areas of the game.

Those who have worked with Anderson earlier in his career are not surprised by his rise. Glenn Whelan, who coached him during his loan spell at Bristol Rovers, recalls his immediate impact. Despite initial concerns about whether he could handle the physicality of lower-league football, Anderson quickly proved his worth.

During his time at Bristol Rovers, he scored seven goals in 21 appearances, playing a crucial role in the team’s promotion. One of the most memorable moments was his contribution to a remarkable 7-0 victory on the final day of the season, which secured automatic promotion.

Whelan believes Anderson possesses qualities reminiscent of legendary players such as Paul Gascoigne. His ability to take on multiple opponents and influence matches sets him apart, and there is a strong belief that he can reach the highest levels of the game.

Looking ahead, many expect Anderson to become a central figure for England in the years to come. His combination of talent, determination, and work ethic suggests he has the potential to achieve great success on both the domestic and international stage.
