The 17th match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2023-24 was host to Hobart Hurricanes vs Melbourne Stars. The game between the two teams took place at the Bellerive Oval Stadium in Hobart and it saw the Stars winning the game with 7 wickets in hand as per DLS.
Asked to bat first, Hobart Hurricanes were off to the worst possible start as they lost opener Matthew Wade early. But after that, Macalister Wright (33) and Caleb Jewell (45) took opposition to the cleaners and smacked them all over the park. The duo added 37 runs for the second wicket but after that, nothing went their way. Hobart Hurricanes lost wickets at regular intervals and were tumbling at 98/6. After that, Nikhil Chaudhary (32) played a cameo that powered Hobart Hurricanes to a total of over 150.
For Melbourne Stars, Glenn Maxwell and Haris Rauf picked three wickets each. Whereas Joel Paris, Imad Wasim, and Usama Mir picked one scalp each that helped his side bundle out the opposition for 155 runs.
The rain then curtailed the second innings and the match was reduced to 7 overs and the target was set to just 67 runs. Melbourne Stars didn’t have the kind of start they hoped for as Sam Harper bagged a golden duck. If this was not enough, Marcus Stoinis also bagged a three-ball duck, and the Melbourne Stars were left tottering at 1/2. Things got more worse for them them Hilton Cartwright (2) also perished and they were under immense pressure.
However, skipper Glenn Maxwell played a blinder and scored an unbeaten 35 runs off just 18 balls. He smashed 4 four sixes in his innings. He was supported well by Thomas Rogers (21*) as Melbourne Stars completed a 7-wicket win in the game.
For Hobart Hurricanes, Riley Meredith bagged two wickets whereas Nathan Ellis picked one wicket.
