Team US reaches Fed Cup Finals after their doubles win against Latvia

Sofia Kenin, the champion of this year’s Australian Open was not hoping that she would be taking the court again after she came short in her singles match for Team US in the Fed Cup.

After Serena Williams also got defeated for the first time in the singles match of Fed Cup, it was left all to the duo of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sofia Kenin to get the team US into the Fed Cup finals.

Kenin said, “I was cheering so loudly for Serena. I was really nervous for her. I was super excited.  This is why we play, it is for a moment like these and these are the moments, we can remember forever.”

Mattek-Sands and Kenin partnered up to get the victory over Latvia’s double duo of Anastasija Sevastova and Jelena Ostapekno by 6-4 and 6-0. With this win, team US was also able to win the Fed Cup qualifying match over Latvia by 3-2.

The day was really challenging for team US as they came to the match with a 2-0 lead but then Kenin got defeated by Ostapenko and then Sevastova also gave an unexpectedly good performance to beat Serena Williams in their singles match.

In the doubles between two teams which was held only 3 hours of Kenin’s singles defeat, Kenin came to play the doubles after replacing Alison Riske. While she seemed to be tired in her loss to Ostapenko earlier on the day, Kenin seemed to have found some kind of boost with her partner Mattek-Sands to help the US win and to take a trip next to Budapest, Hungary. It is where the Fed Cup Finals will be held in the coming month of April.

Mattek-Sands said, “The last match of the day, you do not know if it is going to count for anything or if it is all coming down to it. I have been ready for both as I have been in both situations.”
