Australia falters to 121-5 before crossing the finish line to claim a 4-1 series score over England on the last day of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney; Jake Weatherald (34) survives the contentious “not out” Snicko call when Marnus Labuschagne (37) is dropped on 20.

After a tense final day in Sydney, Australia narrowly defeated England by five wickets in the fifth Ashes Test, gaining a 4-1 score that demonstrated the hosts’ supremacy throughout the series.

Australia stumbled to 121-5 on the last day at the Sydney Cricket Ground, set at 160 to win after England added 40 to their overnight score for the loss of their final two wickets. However, Alex Carey (16no) and Cameron Green (22no) scored the final 39 runs needed to avoid an embarrassing final defeat.

Score summary for the fifth Ashes Test between Australia and England at Sydney Cricket Ground

In 97, England 384 all out.Joe Root (160), Harry Brook (84), Jamie Smith (46), Michael Neser (4-60), Scott Boland (2-85), Mitchell Starc (2-93), and Marnus Labuschagne (1-14) were chosen to bat in the first innings.

In the first innings, Australia scored 567 all out in 133.5 overs: Josh Tongue (3-97), Brydon Carse (3-108), Ben Stokes (2-95), Travis Head (163 off 166 balls), Steve Smith (138), and Beau Webster (71no).

England 342 all out in 88.Second innings: Beau Webster (3-64), Mitchell Starc (3-72), Scott Boland (2-46); Jacob Bethell (154), Ben Duckett (42), Harry Brook (42)

Australia in 31, 161-5.Second innings, two overs: Josh Tongue (3-42), Will Jacks (1-42), Marnus Labuschagne (37), and Jake Weatherald (34). Ash Tongue (3-42) was sharp with the ball once more for England, increasing his wicket total to 18 over the last three Tests and highlighting his exclusion from the first two. When Labuschagne was on 20, he should have added Marnus Labuschagne to his total, but Jacob Bethell made his first mistake in the Test when he knocked down a good chance at gully. Labuschagne was finally run out for 37.

As the series was marred by yet another Snicko dispute, England might also wonder what might have happened if Jake Weatherald had been removed for 16 instead of 34.

Doubts about the accuracy of the Snickometer technology used to detect edges off the bat dominated the third Ashes Test in Adelaide. The problem reappeared when replays seemed to show a slight nick behind by Weatherald off Brydon Carse, but the third umpire failed to make the call.

As part of Australia’s middle-order wobble, Usman Khawaja, who retired after the Test, was dismissed for six in his final innings after being bowled off an inside edge by Tongue. Carey and Green then helped the hosts over the finish line.

The outcome seals a comprehensive series victory for Australia, who had already won the first three Tests in emphatic fashion inside 11 days of play before England secured a consolation victory in just two days on a subpar Melbourne field.

After such a convincing series loss, it is unclear if the England management staff would make any changes. The team’s preparation or lack thereof, given that they have only played one intra-squad warm-up game will be closely examined.

Ben Stokes, the captain, is expected to remain in his position, while Brendon McCullum, the head coach, will benefit from leading England’s white-ball team in the T20 World Cup starting in February. Rob Key, the managing director, may also retain his position because he was appointed to both positions when he took over in 2022.

Australia is scared on the last day in Sydney by England.

After Bethell’s incredible first-class century on day four, England led by 119 runs going into the fifth and final morning of the series in Sydney, with 142 not out.

Before dying for 154 to the second new ball after nicking off to a sharply rising Mitchell Starc delivery that was too near to cut, he crossed his score over 150 but was only able to add 12 to his overnight total. After that, Starc (3-72) dismissed Tongue (6) to conclude the innings and increase his series-high wicket total to an incredible 31, claimed at a rate of 19.93 per wicket.

Before Head became Tongue’s first victim of the innings, Weatherald and Travis Head shared a 62-run opening combination over the first 10-and-a-bit overs to help Australia get off to a great start in their pursuit of England’s relatively modest total.

On the stroke of lunch, Tongue added Weatherald, and after his previous Snicko respite, there was no question about his top edge into the neck of deep fine leg. Shortly after the interval, as England started to think they could pull off the upset, Will Jacks bowled a bewildered Steve Smith (12) with an off-spinner’s fantasy delivery, bowled through the gate from the rough outside off.

England quickly missed two opportunities that would have boosted their confidence: Labuschagne was held down by Bethell off Tongue, and Khawaja edged one past Stokes at slip off Jacks.

Labuschagne hit Jacks out of the attack by hammering 16 precious runs off his next over, but both would soon go in quick succession.

Although the 39-year-old was given a heartfelt send-off by the SCG fans after his dismissal, Khawaja would not have a fairy-tale finale. Meanwhile, Labuschagne was completely devastated when he was run out after Carey made multiple mistakes with his partners late in Australia’s chase. At that point, Australia still needed an additional 39 runs to win, but in the end, Carey and Green led the home team to victory and a well-earned 4-1 series victory despite Carey’s shaky calling between the wickets.

Stokes: Too much 3/10 cricket is played.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, told TNT Sports:

“I believe that teams have been aware of how to work against us for some time. Opposing teams are doing the same thing to us when we find ourselves in a scenario with the bat where things appear simple.

“We must figure out what to do in those circumstances. In terms of the likelihood of it coming off, we play too much 3/10 cricket, which increases the likelihood that it won’t come your way in crucial situations. “As a team, we accomplished some incredible things in the first few years, both in terms of results and bringing out the best in individuals who may not have realized their own potential. We must now do that on a regular basis.

Being direct and honest is how we grow. Without those chats, you don’t make any progress.

“I had things thrown at me when I was younger that I didn’t quite enjoy, but I can look back and know that they were told to me for the correct reasons. “I simply want the lads in the dressing room to have the best opportunity to succeed internationally, which I know they can do. All we require is a recalibration.

Regarding his groin injury: “I’ve been both better and worse. Until I come home, I won’t be aware of [the extent.”

“Snicko nonsense demonstrates systemic inequality”

Speaking for TNT Sports, former England spinner Graeme Swann discussed Jake Weatherald’s non-dismissal on 16:

“Just like Stokes got out in the first innings, there was obviously a murmur. This is where Snicko’s nonsense lies, demonstrating the system’s inequity.

“We must hold the third umpire accountable. That is, in my opinion, one of the most absurd choices I have seen in a very long time.It is necessary to hold the third umpire accountable. That is, in my opinion, one of the most absurd choices I have seen in a very long time.

“I don’t understand how they have continued to use a system that everyone knows is a joke.

“It was demonstrated to be absurd in Adelaide, and things have only gotten worse. Instead of playing cricket, the players lose faith in the system.

“The world has gone insane when you have to employ dubious technologies strategically. England has every right to be confused and insane.
