US wins over Italy but gets eliminated from the Davis Cup Finals

Even the late heroics from the US team at the Davis Cup Finals could save them from getting eliminated out of the tournament.

US team failed to advance into the Davis Cup Finals despite having won over the Italian team by 2-1 in the doubles match held in Madrid.

Jack Sock and Sam Querry duo won the decisive doubles game against the Italian duo of Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli by 7-6, 6-7 and 6-4 but that was not enough to ensure that the US team would play in the quarterfinals for the 6 teams.

Only a big win, which would have included matches won without losing a game, would have made the team enter into the revamped version of the Davis Cup Finals’ knockout stage.

With the US team getting eliminated, they have equalized with the largest gap for the Davis Cup titles as they won the last one back in 2007.

Mardy Fish, the captain for team US said, “I don’t even know what time it is or what day it is or even where we are.  That was pretty special from our guys for sure to win the match.”

Hopes of the US to enter the knockout stage were first kept alive by Taylor Fritz as he defeated Matteo Berrettini by 5-7, 7-6 and 6-2 to level the series by 1-1 after Italy was put ahead by Fognini following his win over Reilly Opelka by 6-4, 6-7 and 6-3.

Fish said, “I am really excited for Taylor as he got his life’s one of the biggest wins.  I am just really happy that I am part of this great moment for him.”

This revamped Davis Cup Finals is being played in the World Cup format where all of the 18 teams are playing in a single place in the same week. This is very different from the previous version where the team had to play head to head with each other at varying venues for 4 weekends that spanned for over the year.
