India batting coach Vikram Rathour lavished praise on Virat Kohli for his crucial innings in the first Test against South Africa. He mentioned that Kohli, as a senior batter, is at a stage in his career where he requires minimal practice.
India and South Africa commenced their two-match Test series in Centurion on 26th December. The Proteas dominated Day 1 after choosing to field first and taking 8 wickets for just over 200 runs.
India found themselves struggling at 24/3, but it was Virat Kohli who rescued them from the early setbacks. Despite not scoring a big total, his innings were crucial in bringing the team back into the game.
Even without practicing in the warm-up game, Kohli looked composed and batted sensibly during the tough situation. He scored 38 runs off 64 balls. Rathour commented that with the way Kohli batted on Day 1, it didn’t seem like he had been away from Test cricket for six months.
“The stage of his career Virat (Kohli) is, I don’t think he needs a lot of practice. He bats a lot and trains a lot. So, if he practiced a few days less, doesn’t matter much. We saw, how well he was playing. It didn’t seem he was away from red ball cricket for six months. It’s a good sign.”

Rathour also praised KL Rahul for his outstanding innings on Day 1, emphasizing his ability to handle tough situations well. After India lost Kohli and Shreyas Iyer in quick succession, Rahul stepped up and played positively and defended and attacked skillfully.
Rahul ended the day unbeaten with 70 runs, and the team will be relying on him to build a big total on Day 2.
