What were the biggest moves of NFL free agency?

The 2026 NFL free-agency period proved to be one of the most dramatic and financially intense in recent memory. Teams across the league made aggressive moves, committing billions of dollars in contracts in an effort to strengthen their rosters and position themselves for success.

With over $4.5 billion handed out in deals, franchises showed a clear willingness to invest heavily—whether to rebuild struggling squads or push already competitive teams closer to Super Bowl glory. From blockbuster signings to surprising reversals, the headlines kept coming throughout a thrilling week of activity.

Ravens Make Headlines with Mixed Moves

The Baltimore Ravens were one of the most talked-about teams during free agency, though not always for straightforward reasons. Initially, Baltimore appeared to have secured a massive trade for star defensive end Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders. However, the deal unexpectedly collapsed at the last moment.

Concerns regarding Crosby’s recovery from knee surgery, along with hesitation about giving up two first-round draft picks, likely influenced the decision to back out. Despite the setback, the Ravens quickly pivoted and secured a major signing by bringing in Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hendrickson agreed to a four-year contract worth $112 million, adding a proven pass-rushing threat to Baltimore’s defense. Under new head coach Jesse Minter, the Ravens are clearly in a “win-now” phase, especially with quarterback Lamar Jackson still performing at an elite level.

For Cincinnati, the move creates additional challenges, particularly for quarterback Joe Burrow, who now faces one of the league’s top pass rushers twice each season.

Chiefs Reload with Experience and Star Power

The Kansas City Chiefs entered free agency determined to bounce back from a disappointing campaign. With concerns surrounding Patrick Mahomes and his recovery from a serious ACL injury, the franchise made key additions to support their star quarterback.

Veteran tight end Travis Kelce committed to returning for his 14th NFL season, signing a contract structured to help the team manage its salary cap. His leadership and experience remain invaluable as Kansas City looks to regain its dominance.

One of the most notable additions was running back Kenneth Walker, who joined from the Seattle Seahawks after earning Super Bowl MVP honors. His three-year, $45 million deal brings explosiveness to a Chiefs rushing attack that has struggled in recent seasons.

Head coach Andy Reid is expected to make full use of Walker’s versatility, particularly in both rushing and short passing situations. The addition could significantly ease the burden on Mahomes and improve Kansas City’s overall offensive output.

Another intriguing move was signing quarterback Justin Fields. With Mahomes recovering, Fields could potentially start early in the season, offering mobility and a different dynamic to the offense.

Colts Invest Heavily in Offensive Firepower

The Indianapolis Colts made a bold statement by committing substantial resources to their offense. Quarterback Daniel Jones was given a two-year deal worth $88 million, including a significant guaranteed portion for the upcoming season.

Despite injury setbacks in the previous campaign, the Colts believe Jones can lead them back into playoff contention. Their confidence was further demonstrated by a major contract for wide receiver Alec Pierce, who signed a four-year deal worth $116 million.

To balance their spending, Indianapolis traded Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers now boast an impressive receiving group alongside DK Metcalf, potentially making them an attractive destination for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Meanwhile, the Colts aim to build around Jones and Pierce, supported by a strong running game led by Jonathan Taylor.

Rams Strengthen Defense for Title Push

The Los Angeles Rams focused on improving their defense, particularly in the secondary, after falling just short in a high-scoring contest against the Seahawks last season.

General manager Les Snead made a significant move by acquiring cornerback Trent McDuffie and signing him to a record-breaking $124 million deal. The Rams didn’t stop there, also bringing in Jaylen Watson.

Both players were part of successful teams in Kansas City and bring championship experience to Los Angeles. Their partnership is expected to solidify the Rams’ defense as they aim for another Super Bowl appearance, especially with the big game set to be hosted in Los Angeles next year.

Titans and Raiders Lead Spending Surge

Among the league’s biggest spenders were the Tennessee Titans and the Las Vegas Raiders, both looking to rebuild after disappointing seasons.

The Titans committed approximately $320 million to new signings, including defensive reinforcements like John Franklin-Myers and Jermaine Johnson. They also made a surprising investment in wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson and strengthened their secondary.

Similarly, the Raiders spent heavily, highlighted by a record-setting deal for center Tyler Linderbaum. His $81 million contract reflects the team’s desire to provide stability for their expected rookie quarterback selection.

While both teams may not see immediate results, these investments are aimed at laying the foundation for long-term success.

Panthers Make a Statement Move

The Carolina Panthers, coming off a playoff appearance, made one of the biggest individual signings by acquiring edge rusher Jaelan Phillips on a $120 million deal.

This move underscores their ambition to build on recent success and strengthen their defensive capabilities as they aim to compete with the league’s top teams.

Conclusion

The 2026 NFL free-agency period showcased the league’s competitive nature, with teams willing to spend aggressively in pursuit of success. While big contracts generate excitement, they also come with significant risks.

Some teams have positioned themselves as immediate contenders, while others are focused on long-term rebuilding efforts. Ultimately, the true impact of these deals will only become clear once the season begins.

For fans, however, one thing is certain: the upcoming NFL season promises to be as exciting and unpredictable as ever.
