Melvine Malard’s Journey from Reunion Island to Manchester United Stardom

A typical morning training session in Manchester often comes with gray skies, chilly winds, and the constant possibility of rain. The atmosphere can sometimes feel dull or gloomy. However, when Melvine Malard arrives at training for Manchester United Women, the mood changes almost instantly.

Malard, a forward for the French national team, brings an energetic and positive attitude that lifts the spirits of everyone around her. While the Manchester weather might be unpredictable, her enthusiasm and vibrant personality bring warmth to the training ground at Carrington.

Growing up on the tropical island of Réunion, located roughly 6,000 miles away from England, Malard was accustomed to sunshine and warm climates. The transition from island life to the often overcast skies of Manchester could have been difficult, but Malard’s joyful personality helps her adapt easily.

Since joining Manchester United on loan in 2023, Malard has quickly become a fan favorite. Her performances on the field have been impressive, but it is her infectious energy and love for football that have truly captured the attention of supporters.

Speaking about her influence at the club, Malard explained that she believes her personality naturally affects the environment around her.

“I think I bring positive energy here,” she said. “I enjoy football and I like to play freely. Football is a job, of course, but first it is passion and for the fans. I think people understand my energy and my vibes.”

Her upbeat personality sometimes surprises her teammates. Malard admits she often enters meetings with excitement and enthusiasm that others may not always expect.

“Sometimes I come into meetings and shout ‘Hello everybody!’ and people tell me to calm down,” she joked. “But I say, ‘Why should I calm down? I’m happy to be here.’”

Although some teammates share her lively attitude, few match her level of excitement. She mentioned players such as Jayde Riviere and Millie Turner as individuals who occasionally share her positive energy, though she believes her personality remains unique within the squad.

Malard describes herself as naturally cheerful and optimistic.

“I’m a very positive person,” she explained. “When people are around me, they won’t feel bored.”

Her journey to professional football is just as fascinating as her personality. Born and raised on Reunion Island, Malard grew up in a community better known for its volcanic landscapes, wildlife, and tropical beauty than for producing professional footballers.

With a population of fewer than one million people, Reunion has only produced a handful of footballers who have made it to the international stage. Among the most notable are former West Ham United star Dimitri Payet and former Newcastle United winger Laurent Robert.

Before discovering football, Malard experimented with several other sports including boxing, karate, judo, and handball. However, once she tried football, she immediately felt it was the sport for her.

“When I started playing football, I knew right away that it was my sport,” she said. “It allowed me to use my energy and play freely.”

She began her football journey with Saint-Denis FC, a club in the island’s capital. Her talent quickly became noticeable, and a life-changing opportunity soon appeared.

At the age of 14, Malard participated in a tournament in Paris where she caught the attention of Sonia Bompastor, who was working with the youth academy at Olympique Lyonnais Women.

The encounter lasted only a short time, but it had a lasting impact. Bompastor was impressed enough to invite Malard to join Lyon’s academy.

“She told me, ‘Mel, I like you. Come to Lyon,’” Malard recalled. “I had two months to think about it, but I said yes immediately because it was such a big opportunity.”

Moving to France at such a young age was not easy. Leaving the warm climate of Reunion for the colder environment of Lyon was a major adjustment, especially for a teenager living far from home.

“It was very difficult at first,” she admitted. “But I knew what I wanted. Every morning and every night I would put on my boots, go to the pitch, and I was happy.”

Her dedication quickly paid off. During her time with Lyon, Malard experienced remarkable success. She helped the club win multiple domestic league titles and several UEFA Women’s Champions League trophies, gaining valuable experience alongside some of the best players in the world.

In total, Malard collected three league titles and four Champions League medals while playing for Lyon. She also became a regular member of the French national team.

Now playing for Manchester United under manager Marc Skinner, Malard has continued to thrive. She has played an important role in the club’s strong performances this season.

United currently sit near the top of the Women’s Super League standings and have also progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where they will face Bayern Munich Women.

Malard has been heavily involved in United’s attacking success. She has contributed to nine league goals, placing her among the most influential players in the team. Only Jess Park has been involved in more goals in the competition this season.

In European competition, Malard is also one of United’s top scorers, having netted three goals in the Champions League campaign.

Her impressive form continued during international duty as well. Recently, she scored twice for France Women’s National Football Team in a 2–1 victory against Republic of Ireland Women’s National Football Team in Dublin.

Despite her success, Malard remains grounded and grateful for the opportunities she has received. She often reflects on how far she has come from her early days on Reunion Island.

Another special moment awaits her soon. Manchester United will face Chelsea Women in the Women’s League Cup final at Ashton Gate Stadium on 15 March.

The match will be particularly meaningful for Malard because Chelsea are managed by her former mentor Sonia Bompastor—the coach who first believed in her talent many years ago.

Malard is excited about the opportunity and hopes to help Manchester United secure their first Women’s League Cup trophy.

“I’m excited because this club deserves success,” she said. “It’s also special to play against my former coach.”

She previously helped United win the 2024 FA Cup, defeating Tottenham Hotspur Women 4–0 in the final to claim the club’s first major women’s trophy.

Now she hopes to add another historic achievement.

“If we win, we make history again,” she said confidently. “I believe in this team and I believe in this club. We want to win everything we can.”

Even on cloudy Manchester mornings, Malard’s passion for football continues to shine brightly.
