England’s performance in their friendly encounter with Uruguay offered a chance for several players to impress ahead of the World Cup. While the match itself lacked intensity and fluidity, individual displays provided insight into who may be pushing for a place in Thomas Tuchel’s final squad.

In goal, James Trafford delivered a composed debut performance. The young goalkeeper looked confident in possession and handled his responsibilities with maturity. Although he was not heavily tested throughout the game, he produced a strong punch to clear a dangerous cross from Uruguay, showing good awareness and decision-making. Overall, it was a steady introduction to international football.

At right-back, Tino Livramento was given the opportunity to showcase his abilities. Having previously featured on the opposite flank, he adapted well to the role. While Reece James remains the first-choice option in that position, Livramento demonstrated that he can provide reliable cover when needed. His performance was solid, if not particularly eye-catching.

In central defence, Fikayo Tomori had a relatively quiet game. The AC Milan defender was not frequently called into action but showed good pace when required to recover defensively. He also formed a stable partnership with Harry Maguire, helping maintain defensive organization throughout the match.

Maguire himself delivered one of England’s stronger performances on the night. The experienced defender was proactive in carrying the ball forward and stepping into midfield when opportunities arose. He also demonstrated his passing ability with a well-placed ball to Noni Madueke in the first half. Taking on the captain’s armband after the break, Maguire showcased leadership and composure, strengthening his case for inclusion in the World Cup squad.

On the left side of defence, Djed Spence provided width but had limited defensive involvement. His forward positioning left space behind him at times, which Uruguay attempted to exploit on the counter-attack. While he contributed to England’s attacking shape, his overall impact remained modest.

In midfield, Jordan Henderson delivered a disciplined and organized performance. He controlled the tempo of the game and provided guidance to younger teammates, ensuring stability in the middle of the pitch. Although he was not heavily challenged, his leadership and experience were evident.

James Garner also impressed in midfield during his first England appearance. The Everton player handled his responsibilities effectively, maintaining possession and contributing to the team’s structure. He was even entrusted with set-piece duties, highlighting the confidence placed in him by the coaching staff. While the match lacked the intensity of competitive fixtures, Garner performed his role efficiently.

Further forward, Phil Foden struggled to make a meaningful impact. Despite his efforts, he was unable to influence the game in the way expected of him. A heavy challenge from Ronald Araujo disrupted his rhythm, and he was eventually substituted in the second half. Given the competition for attacking positions, this was not the performance he needed to secure his place.

Noni Madueke showed glimpses of promise before his evening was cut short by injury. The winger linked up well with Dominic Solanke and displayed a positive approach when on the ball, frequently attempting to take on defenders. Unfortunately, a heavy challenge forced him off after just 38 minutes.

Marcus Rashford was one of England’s most dangerous players. Operating in a more central role at times, he frequently dropped deep to collect possession. His standout moment came in the first half when he carried the ball over a long distance, demonstrating his pace and attacking intent. Rashford consistently looked like a player capable of creating something, making him one of the few bright spots in the match.

Up front, Dominic Solanke produced a few moments of quality. Early in the game, he showed skill by nutmegging an opponent before having his shot blocked during a counter-attack. He combined effectively with Madueke and tested the goalkeeper with a solid effort. However, he was later replaced as England sought fresh options in attack.

Among the substitutes, Ben White experienced a dramatic return to international football. Making his first appearance since the 2022 World Cup, he received a mixed reaction from the crowd. White appeared to have scored a late winner with a close-range finish, only for his moment of glory to be overshadowed by conceding a penalty that led to Uruguay’s equalizer.

Jarrod Bowen came on as a replacement for the injured Madueke but struggled to make an impact. His performance was relatively quiet, and he was unable to influence the game in a meaningful way.

Adam Wharton was introduced to add energy to the midfield, but like many others, he found it difficult to stand out in a disjointed contest. The lack of rhythm in the game limited his opportunities to showcase his abilities.

Cole Palmer provided a spark after replacing Foden. The Chelsea playmaker looked eager to create chances and came close to registering an assist when his free-kick was headed wide by Dominic Calvert-Lewin. His creativity and willingness to take risks were evident.

Calvert-Lewin himself will be disappointed not to have scored. Presented with a clear opportunity from Palmer’s delivery, he failed to convert from close range. It was a missed chance that could have made a significant difference to the outcome.

Harvey Barnes found it difficult to make an impression after coming on, as the game became increasingly fragmented. The lack of cohesion limited his ability to contribute effectively.

Lewis Hall showed defensive awareness with a well-timed recovery challenge. He also demonstrated his attacking potential with a forward run in an attempt to latch onto a through ball from Palmer.

Finally, Kobbie Mainoo made a brief appearance and kept things simple, providing a composed presence in midfield. His return to the England setup was understated but positive.

Overall, the match provided a mixed picture for England’s players. While some individuals strengthened their claims for a place in the World Cup squad, others missed valuable opportunities. With competition for places intensifying, performances like these could prove decisive in the final selection process.
