Serena Williams, in the quarterfinals clash with American player Alison Riske, defeated her opponent to reach the semi-finals of the Wimbledon. With this Serena is bidding to win her 8th Wimbledon title as well as her 24th Grand Slam title.
The unseeded player and world ranked no. 55 Riske was able to set up this quarterfinal against Serna by defeating World rank no. 1 Ashleigh Barty in their 4th round match. For Riske, this was her 30th major Grand Slam appearance.
She was not overpowered by the former world rank no., 1 Williams and instead played a close game with her opponent. In the end, it was still Serena who came on top as she won the match by 6-4, 4-6, and 6-3.
With this, Williams has now moved into her 12th semifinal of the Wimbledon in her last 19 appearances.
Williams said, “I just needed to fight tough with her. Alison, I mean she is a great player who played amazingly throughout this tournament. She was not giving me an easy win at all. I needed to step up and take the win and that is what I did.”
Up next in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon, Serena will be playing against the Czech player Barbora Strycova, an unseeded palely who made it shockingly all the way to set up this major semifinals match.
As for the only top-seeded female player left in the tournament is Simona Halep who made it to the semifinals well by defeating China’s Zhang Shuai in straight sets. This is the 2nd time that Halep has made it to the semifinals of the Wimbledon.
Halep was in trouble during the first set but she gained composure afterward to defeat Shuai by 7-6 and 6-1.
Halep will now take on the 8th seeded player Elina Svitolina in the semifinals match which will be played on Saturday.
As for Svitolina, she made it to the semis by defeating Karolina Muchova by 7-5 and 6-4 to reach her maiden Grand Slam semifinal round.
